Dear Mili

On September 28, 1983, the discovery of a previously unknown tale by Wilhelm Grimm was reported on the front page of The New York Times . "After more than 150 years," the Times noted, "Hansel and Gretel, Snow-White, Rumpelstiltskin, and Cinderella will be joined by another Grimm fairy-tale character." The story of dear Mili was preserved in a letter Wilhelm Grimm wrote to a little girl in 1816, a letter that remained in her family's possession for over a century and a half. It tells of a mother who sends her daughter into the forest to save her from a terrible war. The child comes upon the hut of an old man, who gives her shelter, and she repays his kindness by serving him faithfully for what she thinks are three days. Actually, thirty years have passed, but Mili has remained safe, and with the old man's blessing there is still time for a tender reunion with her mother. As for the pictures that interpret Dear Mili --hailed by School Library Journal as "gorgeous"--they were a milestone in Maurice Sendak's career, the work of a master at the height of his powers. Beautifully Crafted!!

The story moved, pulling me along. Old world melds with new world as the lead character transforms. Interesting plot. Creative story line. Loved the ending! Bravo for Danielle Steel!!!

Interesting story

I liked this book because I found it very interesting. I was able to read about a culture that I didn't know, and get a better understanding. It was a sad, horrible time for Japanese Americans, something that I think many of us forget- this story makes us remember.

RIVETING!

When I first picked up `Silent Honor` I didn't know that the journey the book would take me through would be so full with emotions of every kind possible. So much occurs in the book that it is not humanly possible to write it all down but all I can say is that when you first pick up this book you will read it through every spare minute you have. A masterpiece by any writers standards Danielle Steel's novel of a Japanese...

Silent Honor suprisingly IMPRESSED me!

With wonderfully painted characters and a "self-reflective" plot, Danielle Steel creates a terrific story about the Asian culture and WWII. She obviously has done much research about the time era and culture. I was astounded by the situations that the Japanese American people had to tolerate. As with Message From Nam, I was pleasantly suprised at how Steel writes about war. I've never been a history "buff" nor a historical...
