Eliminating Racial Profiling in School Discipline: Cultures in Conflict

Although the population Bireda targets is young African American males (the affects of racial profiling in school discipline) her recommendations can be applied to almost any educational setting wishing to integrate multiculturalism into the entire school system. The author provides a sound basis for the problem of the over representation of African American and Latino students who are reprimanded and punished for inappropriate behavior in school settings. As a college instructor for a teacher preparatory program, I find Bireda's strategies (listed at the end of each chapter) especially helpful for anyone involved in teacher training on diversity awareness. The author not only lists ethical questions that all teachers would benefit by considering but also provides guidelines for action in order to make sure all children excell in school. I highly recommend this book for anyone who teaches and hope that there is a sequel.
