A very good text on the basic principles of Economics

"Economics" by Paul A. Samuelson and William Nordhaus is a very good text on the basic principles of Economics, particulary of microeconomics. The explanations and graphics are very good. However, Samuelson's economics tended toward leftist principles blessing governmental interventions. Apparently, Nirdhaus is of similar bent. I use Thomas Sowell's books on Economics, with his more conservative outlook, to help me maintain a balance. "Pure" Capitalism has problems and tends to generate monopolies. However, "Pure" Socialism generally puts political policies ahead of pragmatism and distorts the mechanisms of the market to the point where we no longer have "free" markets. If we put politics aside, this book is an excellent teaching tool for elementary or introductory college courses in economics.

The Greatest Textbook on Economics

I remmber my first encounter with this book in 1978 when I was undergraduate student in accounting and finance. In my micro-economics course, the main textbook was W.Hansen "Principles of Economics". When Samuelson's book with its four colors and 3D charts arrived in our colleage libarary, the 150 students of Business faculty were literaly fighting over the only seven copies in the libarary shelves. I have copied more than 50 pages from the book in long hand, there was no photocopy machines at that time, as there was a long queu waiting for the book. I have learned alot from Samuelson's book and I am so pleased to own the first Arabic translation of the textbook in 2005. The translation was superb and made by Hisham Abdllah and published by Al-Ahlia Publishing House in Amman, Jordan.

Seminal Work on Economics

This is a seminal book on economics by world renowned author Paul Samuelson who was later joined by the able William Nordhaus. This is an exceptional book on economics which has benefited hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world for almost six decades. The book has evolved over the years as the world has significantly changed, so as to deal with the real life issues besetting mankind. Over this period, the book has remained as the standard textbook for teaching elementary economics worldwide. The book is now in its sixteenth edition to reflect its continued popularity and utility. The book maintains some basic Keynesian and classical economics models and has included later generation economic science concepts including monetarism, rational expectations and supply side economics. The book has kept pace with such diverse subjects as environmental issues, health care issues and opportunity cost of a college education and the latest developments in the information communication technology. The book is well presented in a logical and easy to read and understand manner.

Most Important Book I Read in College

As I pursue my doctorate in mathematics education and look back over the textbooks I've read over many years of schooling, I'd have to say that Samuelson's Economics--required reading years ago when I took Freshman microecomics--has had the strongest long-term influence on my world view. Concepts like:-the way competition works to make an efficient but not necessarily equitable economy,-positive and negative externalities (i.e., the inefficiency caused when I benefit but you pay) have been critical in helping me understand the currents behind modern political and economic debates. You need some comfort with mathematics (algebra and graphing) in order to get the most benefit from this book--but certainly anyone who did well in Algebra 1 has a sufficient background.I'd recommend this book strongly for anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of human affairs and society.
