Eat.Shop Portland: A Curated Guide of Inspired and Unique Locally Owned Eating and Shopping Establishments

Well being from Vashon Island, off of Seattle, we must say this book is a must! We LOVE Portland, and visit as often as possible....just by chance we found this book. We spent four days running around visiting as many places as possible,(from the book) and had an absolutely incredible time. Finding just about all of them, the only negative aspect of the book, it needs a better map system.....you will still need a good map to find out where you are and where you are going, otherwise no complaints at all. She could put a fold out map in the book and have it made. The restaurants were still delightful and the folks who own these spots were terrific. Another great point is NO advertising! She sussed out these places and wrote about them, period! I can say that over all the many years I've been to Portland, this book in hand made it one of the best ever.....we even bought the book on Seattle, just to find something new and original in our own home town, Portland still beats Seattle by a long shot! But hey, it's all a matter of opinion, right?!

Instead of searching the internet for more up to date recommendations on local eateries and shopping and wondering if the recommendations are accurate, this book is an excellent alternative! Half the books contains one page restaurant reviews, half contains one page shopping reviews; all of the destinations are local favorites. The reviews are cute and funny...usually one paragraph. The different editions of this book have different sets of reviews, so older books will contain different names of restaurants and shops. The preface said they did not repeat places in more up to date editions, but you can look online to get the comprehensive lists of all of the places they have recommended. The book doesn't otherwise give much information about travel in Portland, but it would be an excellent addition to a general guidebook, like Fodor's or Frommers.

What a great book! Not your typical guide book - this one features local businesses, and excellent color pictures - I ordered about 10 guide books on Portland, and this is the ONLY one with colorful photographs.... can't wait to move and try out all the places featured!

Guides to city restaurants and shops are a dime a dozen. How many Web sites were propped up in the late 1990s, purportedly to answer just this simple question: where is a good place to eat/shop? About a trillion dollars worth. And yet, in 2004, the answers are not to be found online but instead in this simple, elegant guide, eat.shop.portland. Unlike some travel writer's 12-hour synopsis of a town that they just parachuted in on, Wellman dishes out a hip-yet sensible guide to the real Portland that is as well-designed as it is well-written.eat.shop.portland should be required reading for anyone about to entertain guests from out-of-town or in from the suburbs.

eat.shop.portland is a true treasure trove of what Portland has to offer. If you're looking for authentic portland-style restaurants and shops, this is the book to own. I've been here seven years and there are places in it I have never heard of ... but can't wait to try. In my opinion every Portlander should have a copy of eat.shop.portland with them at all times.
