User-friendly learn Spanish book

I purchased this and another book to use in a continuing education spanish class. This book was by far the superior book to use in learning spanish. It gives step-by-step instruction---just as the title says. Great purchase.

Closest book to one stop shopping and affordable too!

I agree with some of the reviewers below who say this book has shortcomings in terms of being an ALL things to ALL people text. However.... it is the CLOSEST thing I've every seen to a one-stop shopping solution for the student of Spanish. It introduces vocabulary in order of importance, is very logically structured and presents grammar in chunks along with vocabulary and reading material so that the reader can integrate it. I have spoken Spanish for a many years and own LOTS of books. This book is dollar-for-dollar one of the best values out there and I have a shelf of just Spanish books. However, this resource can't stand alone. If you are serious about learning Spanish I think you will find that you need Spanish I - 2nd Rev. Ed.: Learn to Speak and Understand Spanish with Pimsleur Language Programs (Comprehensive) or the less expensive Conversational Spanish: Learn to Speak and Understand Spanish with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's) to get good at listening and speaking at conversational speeds. Don't make the mistake that Pimsleur materials are like any of the other recorded material out there.... they are NOT... they are hands-down the best audio only program I know of to get things into long-term memory. Another excellent, but wow... expensive product is Rosetta Stone V3: Spanish (Latin America), Level 1, 2 & 3. While this product is expense, you can buy it used or one piece at a time. Unfortunately, I like Level I the least.... but the other levels are well worth the expense in terms of speeding up your learning process, solidifying concepts and getting you to think it Spanish. It also teaches grammar by immersion.... similar to how a baby learns language. In short.... you can't go wrong with this inexpensive, but well-organized, dense and manageable book. It is not superficial, but it is also fun and a good reference.

A great starter book!

I am new to the language and this book allows me to learn at a nice pace. My husband and I are taking beginning Spanish and this book is a great help.

Great book for learning spanish quickly and easy.

Used this book in a Spanish course and it made the course enjoyable. Book was well organized and easy to follow. I would recommend this book for learning spanish quickly.

From 0 to 60 in five

I used this book to go from virtually no knowledge of Spanish grammar, to pretty decent competence with everything it covers (all parts of speech up including the most common verb tenses). In my opinion, it's probably the best of it's class. There are hundreds of exercises, and if you do them all, you'll end up learning the subject. Much more than grammar is covered, though. It's great for giving an excellent basic vocabulary that covers many aspects of daily life. One particularly clever trick it uses to boost vocabulary is inconspicuously including many cognates unannounced among the Spanish vocabulary that is taught. The result is you find you can use and understand far more words than you were consciously learning. A surprisingly early chapter has you reading a rather detailed and convincing letter about a family trip to Mexico that touches on archeology, music, language, personal feelings, and more. The pace is very fast... If you're brand-new to Spanish, and you don't know how to count to ten, or that "perro" means dog, you might want something a tad more basic first. Also, it's dense. If you already know some Spanish words, all the exercises in each of the earlier chapters can be done in a single sitting, but by the middle of the book, plan on spending several days on each chapter... The exercises will stretch you and make you think and process what's been covered. Lastly, it's not a tourist' phrasebook. It's vocabulary goes quickly far beyond "tourist Spanish," and I recommend it highly for the traveller; but it doesn't replace a well-planned phrasebook oriented to tourist needs
