Dragons in a Bag

I just got done reading this allowed to my 7 year old daughter at bedtime. We both loved it!

Zetta Elliot's Dragons in a Bag is about a boy named Jaxon (Jax) whose mother has mysteriously left him with grumpy Old Ma for the day. He quickly realizes Old Ma is not his grandmother and much less interested in watching over him. Just before he's had enough of her shady and strange behavior, he stumbles into Ma's magical world of dragons, new friends, and adventure. Ma gives Jax a chance to prove himself as her apprentice. Along the way, Jax learns more about himself, his friends, and his family as he navigates and overcomes challenges on his journey to be a loyal apprentice to Ma. In terms of learning moments for Jax and the reader, the story depicts a coming of age adventure showing relatable experiences that can be difficult. To balance it out, Elliot does a great job at creating silly, imaginative moments and plot points. What I really appreciate about this book is the show of intergenerational relationships, conflict, and growth as well as a depiction of a character without normal family securities and comforts.
