Book Review

This book was exceptional in the help it provided with my newly sick dogs. I was able to find many ways to help them and me through this.

An Excellent Guide

I am a veterinary assistant, but by no means an expert on diabetes in dogs. My heart sank when one of my dogs was diagnosed with diabetes with an initial glucose level of 570. I was shocked, since she was neither overweight, was on a high fiber diet, plenty of exercise and is a mutt. We were in good shape. As soon as she was diagnosed with diabetes I purchased this book and have to say it was a God sent. It took away my fears of her not being able to live a normal , active, happy life. It is very reassuring to know that Caroline Levin is a registered nurse and most of all has had the experience of having had a dog with diabetes. She has done all the research for us with dogs with Diabetes, Panceatitis, Cushing's Disease etc.. This book is so comprehensive that it answered all of my questions. My dog is happy and active and with a few lifestyle changes we are in good shape again. Thank you Ms. Levin for sharing your knowledge and experience.

This book turned sorrow into solutions

Having just been diagnosed this year with diabetes, my beloved Coco and I were struggling with the newness of our changed routine, diet, schedule etc. This book helped educate me and put it all in perspective and find the right program for Coco. Understanding led to action which led to strength and control of our new situation. A must read for all canine diabetes families.

HUGE help for my blind dog!

My dog, Scout, was diagnosed with SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration) so I ordered this book along with "Living With Blind Dogs". That one helped with day-to-day issues, but "Dogs, Diet, and Disease" really helped with the health problems that came along with SARDS. We followed the author's suggestions for a more natural diet and lifestyle, and a few months later we did the lab tests recommended by the author and started hormone replacement therapy. What a difference it made! Scout's vision didn't change, but I have my old dog back. No more depression! A normal appetite! This is the only book to my knowledge that discusses SARDS, offers scientific research, and a plan of care for these dogs. My vet read it too. We're both big fans!

A must-read for anyone coping with these illnesses in dogs!

This is by far the most comprehensive book for dog owners on the topics of Cushing's Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, and Pancreatitis that I have ever seen! Ms. Levin's professional background as a Registered Nurse with experience in endocrinology has enabled her to explain the illnesses in clear detail, and to educate owners on how they can better care for their dogs at home. This book covers much more than any vet could during an office visit, in language that is compassionate, supportive, and helpful. Her detailed discussion of various diet options, including commercial dog food, home-cooked, and fresh raw diets, displays her wealth of knowledge on the connection between diet and health. Her carefully worded and illustrated instructions on measuring blood glucose levels at home and giving insulin injections will help even the most nervous owner learn to care for a diabetic dog. I wish this book had been available when my beloved Boston Terrier, Halley, was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease 5 years ago. But having read it now, I feel well-prepared to care for another dog with one of these illnesses, if the need should arise. I hope that veterinarians will recognize the value of this book, even if they don't agree with everything Ms. Levin has to say (and some will not), and recommend it to their clients to enable dialog that will lead to better health care for chronically ill dogs. I certainly recommend it to all dog owners, as a good reference for preventing illness as well as coping with illness.
