Doc Maynard: The man who invented Seattle

I bought this book after a visit to Seattle and after taking the tour of Underground Seattle. I just had to have more details of the city's past. This book fills in a lot of blanks. A fun read. Also check out "Sons of Profits" by Speidel.

Bill Speidel revised Seattle history with Doc Maynard, the Man Who Invented Seattle. Speidel had been writing about his favorite city and state for 25 years when, in 1978, he published this lively and humorous re-examination of Seattle's history. What he learned while researching this book changed his view of the city's beginnings. Doc Maynard, in turn, has altered our understanding of how the "Queen City of the Northwest" got off the ground. Speidel, who died in 1988 at age 76, was a noted storyteller, humorist, official state historian and himself a Seattle favorite son. An active preservationist, he was instrumental in the creation of Seattle's Pioneer Square Historic District. Speidel founded several local enterprises, including the popular Underground Tour of historic Seattle, and Doc Maynard's, a Pioneer Square restaurant and tavern. I have read this book and I have to tell you, it is so well written and eloquent, a real page turner. I have also read Sons of the Profits, another book from Speidel and it is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. The books are funny and notoriusly accurate for the Seattle history.
