A wonderful, thought provoking book

This is a book which grabs your attention from the beginning. I had avoided it because I thought the subject matter would bother me. I can't stand to read about animals in pain. But I managed to persevere and really enjoyed it. I have to confess that I hated the ending, but I could see how it fit the book. I have looked up Premarin on the internet. It is as awful as portrayed in the book. Humans are anything but, I'm afraid.

Did I read the same book you did?

I rarley write reviews but I am an avid reader and enjoy reading the reviews. I almost always agree with the majority of the reviewers, but not this time. I thought this book was outstanding. There was only one element that seemed slightly unbelievable, but the writing and huge unexpected twists more than made up for it. Three times I was sure I knew what was going to happen, but was wrong. The ending was very satisfying, if sad. Melrose Plant and the whole hermit sideline was bizarrely funny. I thought this book reached beyond the run of the mill mystery. The book had some very poignant moments. Loved it!

Jury is fine, but Plant makes me laugh

I thought it was great just like all the other books by Martha Grimes. Plant has become more of a main character in the Jury novels, and has been for some time. That's fine with me,I love Plant! He makes me laugh...I have always read the Jury novels, not only because they are well written , but for Plant's dry, sarcastic and sometimes caustic sense of humor. It's a great read, don't be disuaded by those who don't like the spotlight off of their beloved Jury. Change is good, and the book is still wonderfully written. So if you don't read the Grimes books for the love of Jury only, but all the wonderful characters like Agatha, Trueblood and Wiggens, then you will enjoy this one as well.

Did the other reviewers really read this book?

Martha Grimes is a master writer and has once again proven herself so with the Grave Maurice. Her plot was so spellbinding that I read the novel in just two days. It is about time that someone exposed the suffering for profit of the pregnant mares and the questionable benefit thereof to women. If we are to call ourselves civilized we must consider animals as well as people. Martha, you go girl! I found the book well plotted, with the usual great zany characters that I found highly amusing. I loved the hermit in the hermitage! I cared about all of the characters, especially the tragic and enigmatic Nell and Vernon Rice. What's not to like about this book?

Unable to stop reading

From the moment I started reading The Grave MauriceI was unable to put it down unless outside circumstancesforced me to. Martha Grimes has a way of writing about characters thatalways makes me care about them. I understand the adults because there is always some aspect of mein each one of them. And when she writes aboutchildren, it is a delight. It was wonderful to revisit with Jury and his friends. If I were a going to be a writer, I would studyall of Martha Grimes books. She has a way of making all the things she describes a part of thestory. Not all details advance the story, but inher hands, the detail is always a part of the story. It is so easy to visualize what she is writing about.I highly recommend this book.
