The creation of the present highly reliable intelligent digital circuit switching network that now makes up most of the nation's public telecomunications infrastructure is an engineering feat that has yet to be duplicated by much the rest of the world. Many people who have traveled abroad to another countries have commented on this, but few people actually understand why this is so. This book has given me some new insights as to why this is the case. Let me say first that this book is highly technical - it's primary audience is engineers involved with questions such as how to best measure quality of service, how reliable a particular hardware design is, and what processes produce software and software upgrades (called patches in the digital switching world) that contain the fewest errors. Yet much of this information can be used by prospective buyers for assessing a vendor's product and support processes. The book is thoughtfully organized and contains many useful illustrations that help the reader visualize the material that is presented. There is some math in this book that is unavoidable (this is a applied science book). As an engineer its almost impossible for me to understand how an intelligent treatment of a subject such as reliability engineering could be accomplished otherwise. I recommend this book without reservation, to anyone interested in this multifaceted subject.
