Diary of Indignities

Diary of Indignities first foisted itself on an unsuspecting public on the popular blog Bad News Hughes, where thousands of readers are disgusted, amused and just plain baffled by these vivid, seriocomic stories of soul-melting shame. Patrick Hughes doesn't understand exactly where, or when, things went wrong in what should have been a normal life,' but he's more than happy - make that driven - to share his personal calamities with his readers.'

Delightful

Pat Hughes is this generations David Sedaris-poignant, funny and pithy, Diary of Indignities is delightful at every turn. An unsuspected triumph for all ages!

This is real life, sort of

Though this isn't overtly a book about punk-rock, I think it does a terrific job of conveying the spirit of the G'ville p-rock scene, at least as I experienced it from the mid-80s through the early 90s -- unpredictable, wild, sometimes downright dangerous, other times oddly quaint. Patrick has more guts than I'm ever gonna have. Probably the same is true for you -- check out just how much he has to say about unrequited love, family dysfunctionality, rectal problems, roommate issues or saltwater catfish -- chances are you'll end up thinking "damn, how does this guy manage to show his face in public after all this?" He's a damn writer, that's how. Check it out....

What a douche!

Patrick Hughes is an evil brilliant genius, carving his niche out of the publishing world with blood and bone and poo water. You should buy this book. Not only will it make you smarter and better looking, it will also make you laugh until you cry. I'm not just saying this because he thanks me in the intro, either. He is a hilarious man, and this is an epic book of hilarious stories, well-told.

It's like sitting on the front porch with a crazy old man

It feels good to laugh so hard you weep, and if you want to feel good like that, this is the book to get you there. Pat Hughes suffers the indignities, so you don't have do, and believe me there are woes visited upon this man the likes of which you have never imagined. Hughes' writing is engaging, and the whole thing is like sitting on the front porch with a world-class yarn spinner, slapping your thigh and guffawing every few minutes until everyone has to pause to catch their breath. Truly a must-have book.

A book that really doesn't suck...

Hughes is able to tell his stories with both humor and humanity. Everyone has tales of growing up, but this book is written at a level of skill very few story tellers could come close too even if their adventures were as notable. Through most of the book you will find yourself laughing out loud, but at least one chapter choked me up to the point I pronounced it as "the saddest thing I've ever read". Do yourself a favor and buy this book.
