In this revised second edition, Houle offers an up-to-date blueprint for planning, setting up, and evaluating adult education programs of any size--along with specific guidance that shows educators how to use his model to implement the type of program best suited to their needs and the needs of their learners.
This book was written not only for the experienced adult educator but for anyone interested in learning about designing your own course or system. This is a practical book. Houle reviews a history of program design along with five case studies that illustrate the model that he proposes. His model presents a detailed analysis of 11 categories of possible educational activities along with the details of his 7-step system of program design. This book is well-written and practical. His focus ranges from the individual program to mass audiences. I especially like the chapter on "Mastering a Personal System of Practice" which helps the reader translate the system into a useful and practical one. Overall, I think that it is an excellent book and highly recommend it as a worthwhile addition to an educator's library.
