"The day I do this again," Fargo declared,"is the day buffalo sprout wings and fly."

From the scene on the cover,of Fargo mounted on his Ovaro with his rifle at the ready, watching a black man,a white man in red,and an Indian chasing an Indian Maid through the mountain;it is hard to figure what this yarn is going to be all about. After a week on the trail,Skye Fargo comes into Nugget,Nevada. It is 1861,and Nugget is a booming mining town, with lots of action and little Law and Order;just the kind of place The Trailsman enjoys for some rest, whiskey, doves, cards, and a few good meals;before hitting the trail again. What he finds instead, is a town that is getting ready to celebrate with a 10 mile endurance race,in the hot Nevada heat, with a $10,000 prize up for grabs. That is a huge payoff, even for someone like Fargo, who lives from one bonanza to the next;but it is not Skye's cup of tea to enter. The race is complicated by two scoundrels, one the Mayor, and the other a ruthless business tycon who are vying for total control at any cost, to complicate matters further, the local Law are rotten as well as inept. If you are a reader of this series, you just gotta know that Skye is gonna get involved, whether he plans to or not. You are going to have to read this exciting, action packed story yourself, to find out what happens. What I will tell you is that Fargo gets into the contest;but unlike situations that Fargo faced in the past, this is one where he comes out the loser. He doesn't win the money,he is lucky not to lose his life; but as expected there is always a way to find consolation, when one is as gifted as our hero.
