Delia's Heart

This second book in the new Delia series deserves a place in any general lending collection, especially where patrons have prior enthusiasm for V.C. Andrews' dramatic characters and style. Here Delia has survived a desert crossing to protect a friend from murder charges but again must leave her tiny Mexican hometown for Palm Springs - only to face a malicious cousin and troubled Mexican-American politics and family relationships alike. A fine drama continues and needs no prior introduction to prove accessible and compelling.

The first in this series (Crossing) I found to be a bit hard to read because every other sentence was in Spanish and after a while I got annoyed with trying to read it. I hoped that this one would be easier to read and it was. I felt when I read the first one I was being given a Spanish lesson. This one however was fun to read and hard to put down. I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. I thought the story line was great and the characters were great as well. If you want a good book that you can't put down, pick this one up!

After living in the United States for a few years (see DELIA'S CROSSING), poor Mexican girl Delia Yebarra still feels like a stranger in a strange land. She returned to her homeland briefly with Ignacio Davila after his role on the death of the person who raped Delia was known by everyone. Everyone but his family and Delia thinks he is dead and Ignacio wanted Delia to return to her Aunt Isabelle's Palm Springs estate. Isabelle believes her niece is an impoverished wetback, whom she treats like a servant rather than a relative. Her son Edward blackmails his mom into giving Isabella similar opportunities as his sister Sophie has. Sophie hates Delia while is also jealous of as important people seem to always defend her. She tries to destroy her cousin by telling her mom lies and spreading rumors that Delia cannot disprove. When Adam Bovio starts paying attention to Delia, Isabella is thrilled because his family is rich high society starting with his father running for senator. Outraged and envious Sophie vows to send Delia back to Mexico anyway she can. The lifestyle of the children of the wealthy prominent high society families come across as vapid, causing trouble a mainstay to keep the ennui abated. Delia lived a simple life in Mexico so has major adjustments to being part of the rich and famous crowd while also wondering if she is running from her roots. Readers will admire and like this conflicted person and hope she finds what she wants. Her female cousin and aunt are over the top of the Sierras as villains and the story line somewhat mirrors the first tale; yet fans of V.C. Andrews will enjoy this fine entry and look forward to the next Delia Cinderella like story. Harriet Klausner

It honors me to review another book by V.C. ANDREWS aka Andrew Neiderman. I had hoped to beat the "Queen of Mean" to a review but alas she beat me. But here is a good review for you. I only wish some people would get over the fact that Ms. Andrews died 20 years ago and without Mr. Neiderman's brilliance, we would not have VCA novels anymore. I never review the book or the plot. You have to read it and enjoy it. But this is not a tweener novel as the Queen of Mean suggests. Delia's Crossing pleased me very much, but simply put, I was blown away by Delia's Heart. This is an honest, heartfelt, gripping novel of a young woman pulled in so many directions I could hardly keep track of them. Yet she still manages to hold her head up high and come through it with the greatest gift of all... a child on the way. Aunt Isabella is a villain as true as Olivia Foxworth. You want to like her, you want to feel for her and her circumstances, but you just can't. She turns off hot and cold like a water faucet! I said it before and I will say it again... Isabella Dallas deserves a novel of her own! Beginning with the Willow series and continuing with this, the Delia series, there is a marked maturation of the characters and the plots. Young folks, "tweeners", and us old folks (ha ha) can enjoy the Willow and Delia works. I also liked very much that the book takes place over a matter of some years... not a short period of time. We get such a better insight into the characters. Will Delia's Gift blow me away even more? I sure hope so! Later in the year we will be treated to the Heavenstone Secrets. Dare we hope for more brilliance? Bravo, Mr. Neiderman, bravo!
