An interesting down to earth way to discover why we do the things we do and how we can change.

the body doesn't lie, listen to it.

We've all heard the saying: "it's all in your head" many times before. But as much as we try to calm ourselves over certain matters, it does no good in relieving us of physical symptoms. This does not in any way mean that no illnesses aren't psychosomatic in origin though. The body is so complex that we are simply not aware of the exact origin of our illnesses. After reading this book as well as "Molecules of Emotion" by Candice Pert, I'm thoroughly convinced that most of peoples illnesses have a psychosomatic origin. Martin Rush makes no hard and fast claims and does not claim to have all of the answers. In fact, he put a disclaimer in the front of the book. What he does however is explain what he has learned over the years as a practicing physician and Psychiatrist. He makes a good case that many of the things that ail people have a mental origin. Everything from the common cold, asthma and kidney stones to appendicitis often have mental origins. He discusses how asthma is a crying out for love and affection from one's mother (at least that's how it starts). Personally, I've suffered (sometimes still suffer) from asthma and was split away from my mother at a young age. I can remember within a reasonable degree when I had my first asthma attack and it happened to be the same time I was split from my mother. Rush has a similar example in the book where he was able to cause the patients asthma to flair up via hypnosis and then stop it. One of the most intriguing aspects of this book is the first part "whispers from the body" where he discusses things such as blushing, yawning, sneezing, twitching eyes, cold hands and feet. The origins of these "whispers" are consistent with what I've read in books on body language such as "I Know What Your Thinking" by Lillian Glass. Also, from personal observations and being mindful of how my body reacts to different things lends a lot of credibility to mind-body connection. I've also been able to come up with my own theories based on my own observations. Consequently, I've become much better at reading what other people are thinking. It seems almost magical how one can learn how to read people by being mindful of physical signals we all give off. The more we try to supress these signals, the more they will manefest themselves in ways in which we would never imagine. From reading Pert's book, ("Molecules of Emotion") I well know that our emotions are tied to the flow of peptides in the human body and when we supress emotions it restricts the flow of peptides, leading to illness and even disease which is the gist of this fascinating book. It's not our emotions which cause us problems, it's our suppression of emotions which leads to problems.
