History repeats itself . . .Rich industrialist and Managing Director of Broome Armaments, Sir Edward Broome has recently restored Hagminster Hall as his Norfolk residence. With his wife Elizabeth, and his two young sons he invites a few guests to share the Christmas of 1935. Soon the others arrive, Sir Stanley Derbyshire and his wife Margaret, their son Henry Richmond and turning up uninvited, black sheep of the family, Harry Bookham. Sir Edward's brother, George, who is the Deputy Managing Director of Broome Armaments arrives too, though a third brother and Company Secretary, Richard Broome at first remains in Yorkshire. A series of mysterious deaths occur and it seems as if the inhabitants of the Hall are in some way influenced by the lives of people who lived in the fifteenth century, almost as if they were reconstructing events from the reign of King Richard the Third. When it becomes apparent murder has been committed, Detective Chief Inspector Frank Lovell of the Norfolk police arrives and soon finds that, notwithstanding his presence, the series of deaths is not yet concluded. There are too many suspects and Inspector Lovell must discover what is going on. It soon transpires that the Ghosts of Hagminster Hall, or at least some aspect of them, might possess the corporeal bodies of the gathered company, including his own!
