Dead and Loving It

I bought this book used so there are alot of reviews already. I just want to say I enjoyed every one of these weird stories. Not every book has to be enthralling or mesmerizing some can just be fun to read. That is this one. From a vampire who is frightened to make love to a woman because of his strength, to a werewolf who finds his mate on a city street ringing santa bells because she smells like fresh peaches. Next we have a blind werewolf doctor who finds he can see one fabulous woman that he needs for his mate, and guess what she is not human either. The last story is about the fiend George from Betsy and Sinclairs Vampire stories. It was cute and made for four out of four cute stories. If you need to buy it used like me, do it. It is well worth the money and the wait.

Santa Claws Alec Kilcurt is the most powerful werewolf in Europe. He is the laird of Kilcurt Holding and as the head of Scotland's werewolves he has been called to Boston to meet the new pack leader, the drooling infant daughter of the current leader. Miserable at being in the depressing, drizzly place, he quickly changes his mind about Boston when he smells ripe peaches coming from the Santa Claus standing on the street corner. Giselle Smith can't believe it when the incredible man comes rushing up to her. What's more is that he seems to be suffering from the delusion that under the fat Santa suit she is some delectable treat. Agreeing to go to lunch with him, and praying he isn't a psycho, her plan backfires with a case of food poisoning. Good news for her that Alec is determined to nurse her back to health. Santa Claws is a fantastic story about an incredibly appealing werewolf and his intended mate. I loved their bantering, and the sex is incredibly hot. This is a great combination of humor and intense heat! Monster Love Richard Will has been a vampire for over sixty years. Janet Lupo has been a werewolf for a lot less time than that. Both are alone. Richard has trouble finding a human woman to keep up with his passions, and Janet just has trouble finding a man, werewolf or human, to put up with her. When Richard spies Janet being followed by a group of unsavory men, he rushes to her rescue, not realizing that she doesn't need his help. Despite her repeated attempts to rebuff him, she finally accepts his invitation to dinner, only to be forced to cancel at the last minute. Richard doesn't take it nicely and decides that the only course of action is to kidnap her. Richard and Janet, a.k.a. Dick and Jane, are an unbelievable couple, an unbelievably gut-busting, hilarious couple. Janet is a very prickly woman who is just short of mental, but she is incredibly appealing. Dick accepts her nature, and the two together are fantastic. There's No Such Thing as a Werewolf Drake Dragon is a very unique individual. He is a blind doctor that just happens to turn furry once a month. Crescent Muhn is not exactly normal either. She has been on the streets for years, and is currently running with a very bad crowd. After her friends make a failed attempt to attack Drake, one she refuses to take part in, she just wants to make sure the man is all right. He just wants to know why he can SEE her, and only her. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, and determined to get into the pants of the very appealing woman, Drake offers her a place to stay. Drake and Crescent make a very fascinating couple. Crescent is an oddball creature, and Drake is just incredible in what he can do. I found myself breathlessly turning the pages to find out what would happen next. MaryJanice Davidson is nowadays a best-selling author thanks to her vampire romances (the Undead-series). But she started in the business with smaller publishers like Red Sage Publishing or Ellora's Cave, who publish erotic novels and novellas. That's where her werewolf-series was born. The first two novellas are still available in two "Secrets" anthologies by Red Sage Publishing. She published three more novellas, originally with Ellora's Cave, but those were either published as ebooks only, or the print version was soon off the market and used books were extremely expensive if available at all. Only when she continued the series with the mainstream market publisher of her Undead-series (the title of this book is Derik's Bane), her older novellas were rediscovered and are now published with a new novella that connects the Undead- with the Wyndham-werewolves series. So "Dead and loving it" is a collection of formerly published erotic novellas and a new one that's supposed to boost sales because it's connected to the Undead-books. The four novellas are: - Santa Claws: When a Scottish werewolf comes to America, he smells his perfect mate. Will she return to Europe with him after a wild night of sex? - Monster Love: A vampire falls for a female werewolf, but when she seems to lie to him and leave him, he kidnaps her and keeps her prisoner in his bedroom. They scorch the sheets, but will that be enough to keep her with him when the next full moon gives her the power to break out of her prison? - There's no such thing as a werewolf: A blind werewolf falls in love with a young woman who keeps trying to jump off houses to fly. His wish to protect her soon turns into love. - A fiend in need: George the fiend (Undead-series) falls in love with Antonia, the seer of the Wyndham werewolves. Another unlikely couple find their way to true love. The novellas are very sexy and extremely funny. The principle may be similar (unusual couple finds love through wild sex, often politically uncorrect, like kidnapping etc.), but they are still different enough for my taste and really hilarious and entertaining. They are definitely my Davidson-favourites. There are a lot of Undead-fans who gave them negative reviews, but I think that's really because Davidson's style regarding sex in these early novellas is so very different from what she's successful with nowadays. I got to know her through the Wyndham-werewolves, and must say that I really love these early, very daring and funny stories, while I was rather disappointed with her tamer later books, like Derik's Bane. I guess it will be difficult for her to reconcile the two factions of readers. But I myself really love her Wyndham-werewolves and am happy that they are finally available as a collection in print. If you like her sense of humour and don't have a problem with very explicit and daring sex scenes, this book should be worth buying. "Dead and Loving It" presents 4 short stories, each with an obviously mismatched couple that somehow fall in love and make it work. Santa Claus - A story about a chubby but adorable human girl, who while dressed in a Santa Claus suit for charity, is sniffed out (literally) by her future werewolf mate. When Alec caught a whiff of peaches, he realized immediately that Giselle was his one and only. What follows is a charming and funny story, even if the sex is bordering on erotica. Monster Love - is about a vampire male, Dick, and his future werewolf, Janet. Janet and Dick have a wonderful encounter, which in retrospect, they both fall in love. They make a date, which Janet is forced to break in order to follow her pack master's orders. Dick becomes absolutely enraged at Janet. He believes she has been leading him on, so he does what any normal self-respecting vampire would do - he kidnaps her - not realizing, of course, that in 3 days there is a full moon. Boy, is ol' Dick in for a surprise! Janet has one wicked temper. There's No Such Thing as a Werewolf - Drake Dragon is a blind werewolf. All of his life he has been aware of the fact that he should have been killed at birth. Handicapped werewolves are basically a no-no. While saving Crescent Muhn (yes, that's her name) from some problems in an alley, Drake meets his future mate. To tell you Crescent's species would be giving away a good part of the story, but it is told charmingly and Drake steals your heart. A Fiend in Need - George (his name is actually Garrett) finds his mate! Antonia Wolfton is a werewolf, who because of her human parent, can't shift - but can see bits and pieces of the future. Because of a vision, Antonia journeys to meet Queen Betsy, never realizing she was about to attain her heart's desire - freedom from the pack who looks down on her and George. As usual, the verbal interchanges between Betsy and Sinclair are priceless, as well as those of her fabulous roommates - Jessica and Mark. The entire story sparkles with wit. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and read it in about 3 hours. A warning for some - the humor is over-the-top, the "f" word is used fairly frequently and the sex is graphic - borderline erotica. At first I thought the sex was definitely overdone, but I think it was because of the book contained four short stories. If this had been a regular size book about one couple, only one or two really meaningful sex scenes would have been wrote. I think the book leaves the impression of too much sex because it was about 4 separate couples, with each of them coming together in the bedroom at least once. Anyway, I love MaryJanice Davidson's paranormal series. All four stories were great. I consider it a "keeper".

If you read any of the Undead stories, you are familiar with George the Fiend. Poor guy suffered under Nostro's rule for a really long time. Betsy took over though and now he's getting better. He had been knitting, but now he has a girlfriend. I love a happy ending. All of the stories in this book are cute, sexy, sweet and very good. This is a compilation of some Wyndham werewolf short stories that you may not have read and really they are ESSENTIAL reading for any fan of MJD. Buy this book, it's worth it.
