Danny Wuerffel's Tales from the Gator Swamp: Reflections of Faith and Football

Unlike a lot of this sort of book this one does appear to have been written by the author. While I have nothing against ghostwriting I am not fond of it. Danny gives an interesting outlook on his time with the University of Florida's football team.

This book is written by and about Danny Wuerffel in collaboration with Mike Bianchi. Danny Wuerffel and the Florida Gators are synonymous. He represents the best in all of us, and it shows in this book. It's well conceived, well executed, intelligent, articulate, interesting and sometimes humorous. And best of all, it's all about Danny and his life as a Gator. His relationship with, and his insights into, the Old Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier are particularly interesting. It's not War and Peace, but it's a fun read. We all know that Danny is a Christian in the best sense of the word, and he doesn't beat the world over the head with his faith. His light isn't glaring neon; it's the soft light of a living example. It shows in this book. The last chapter is entitled, "Faith and Football", and it's inspiring even to an old "Backsliding Baptist" who has lost his faith. The real inspiration, however, is Danny Wuerffel and the life he leads. If my children were still teenagers, I would want each of them, the boys and the girls, but particularly the boys, to read this book. I know that they would enjoy it, and maybe learn from it. The book is not just for teenagers, however; it would make a good gift for any true Gator. And after we have learned that hurricane Katrina has destroyed Danny's home and his Desire Street Ministries, it's nice to know that the proceeds of his book go to that ministry. Go Gators, enjoy this book!

Having followed Gator football for years, I particularly enjoyed watching the career of Danny Wuerffel. His impeccable character, stellar performances on and off the field, and willingness to share the gospel of Christ without shame made a fan out of me. This book gives a vivid account of Danny's Gator years, including humorous stories and behind the scenes details. Although only the last chapter focuses on his faith, his great character and inner peace shine brightly throughout the book. I learned a lot about this fine example of a man, and I encourage all who have even a passing interest in sports and/or faith to pick it up. I think every reader will find something to inspire him or her to greater things.

If you are a Gator fan or a Danny Wuerffel fan you will love this book. It tells his story and relationships formed throughout his college years. Most importantly he takes you through the National Championship year and brings back good memories. There is some humor and serious thoughts in the book and the print is large. Every few pages there is a picture or two for illustration purposes. I did occasionaly find repetitive statements mentioned earlier in the book but not an overabundance of them. Overall you should like this book and you may be touched spirtually at the end when he discusses his faith and love for God. Pick it up and enjoy it for years to come. Go Gators!
