To-do: Stop the bad guys. Rescue the wizard. Find the perfect outfit for New Year's Eve. At last, Owen Palmer, the dreamboat wizard at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., has conjured up the courage to get Katie Chandler under the mistletoe at the office holiday party. But just when it looks like Katie has found her prince, in pops her inept fairy godmother, Ethelinda, to throw a wand into the works. Ethelinda's timing couldn't be worse. A plot hatched by MSI's rogue ex-employees, Idris and his evil fairy gal pal Ari, threatens to expose the company's secrets-and the very existence of magic itself. Even worse, it could also mean the end of Katie's happily-ever-after. Now Katie and Owen must work side by side (but alas, not cheek to cheek) to thwart the villains' plans. Braving black-magic-wielding sorceresses, subway-dwelling dragons, lovelorn frog princes, and even the dreaded trip to meet Owen's parents at Christmas, Katie and her beau are in a battle to beat Idris at his own sinister game. All mischief and matters of the heart will come to a head at a big New Year's Eve gala, when the crystal ball will drop, champagne will pour, and Katie will find herself truly spellbound. Praise for Shanna Swendson's Once Upon Stilettos "Magical and totally delightful . . . a] quirky, lighthearted romance." -freshfiction.com "A fast and funny read. Chicklit meets urban fantasy." -Mary Jo Putney, author of The Marriage Spell
I enjoyed this 3rd installment of the Katie Chandler Series just as much as the first two. I had a few laugh-out-loud moments, in particular when Katie's roommates held an intervention in the changing room of Victoria Secret (so she couldn't escape). I am going to have to disagree with most of the other reviews, however, in saying that I DID enjoy the ending. It wasn't happy, but it felt necessary for character growth that we should see in the 4th and (hopefully!?) 5th book. The only disappointment is that I have to wait till April for the 4th one.
Love this Series

Keep these Katie Chandler books coming! The characters (even the bad guys) are well written. I loved including the fairy godmother in this book. She gave the story quite a bit of comic relief. The relationship between Katie and Owen developed slowly and kept developing in spite of the interruptions and strange dates. Don't let this book be the end of Katie!
Great Series right up until the last chapter

I fell in love with this entire series right off the bat! The only thing that really bugs me is the ending in this last book. I almost wish I hadn't started reading any of the books. PLEASE come out with a new one FAST and FIX the ending in "Damsel Under Stress"!!!!
Yippee!

Kathleen "Katie" Chandler works at Magic, Spells, & Illusions, Inc. (MSI) She is immune to magic of all types. This is why Katie was sought out and hired by MSI. Being an immune means that Katie can see through any magical trick, spells, glamours, or illusions that MSI's competitors and/or business associates may try. It also means that Katie can see the magical creatures that walks among the normal human population. Owen Palmer is the most powerful wizard at MSI, next to Merlin. (Yes, THAT Merlin. You read it correctly.) Owen and Katie have started dating. Dating is rough due to a major plot being hatched by some of MSI's rogue ex-employees. Not to mention the fact Katie is going to meet Owen's (foster) parents during the Christmas holiday, and they are pretty formal/regal people. Enter the latest new magical creature to Katie's world, Ethelinda, her inept fairy godmother. Ethelinda means well, but it seems nothing goes as expected when she meddles. Katie and Owen must work side-by-side to defeat the villains' plans. However, not only magical spells and rogue wizards are their problems. There are also subway-dwelling dragons to deal with and it looks as if Katie's two roommates may become targets are well. ***** YIPEE! The third installment of Katie Chandler's odd life is finally out! There is more going on with the villains in this episode. MSI seems to be dealing with some magical guerrilla warfare. Fans of this series may be a bit disappointed with the ending, but they may be assured it all means that there will be another MSI novel in the future. (Hopefully the NEAR future.) Clever, magical, and even some humor to keep you grinning all the while, DAMSEL UNDER STRESS is the perfect spell to cure your horrid Monday blues. Excellent! ***** Reviewed by Detra Fitch of Huntress Reviews.
