Barbara A. Curran did a phenomenal job putting together Dallas: The Complete Story of the World's Favorite Prime-Time Soap. For starters, this book is THICK and packed with information. It is a timeline of Dallas, beginning with concept development by producers, selection of cast and development of the characters, and selection of filming locations. What I found exciting about the presentation is that in addition to the full history of the show season by season, this book includes trivia facts as well as personal notes from the cast/crew/producers. This book did an excellent job of giving me the "complete" story about the show and I enjoyed it immensely. I have found it especially entertaining to read corresponding seasons in the book as I acquire the DVD's and watch them. Very insightful. The only thing I would change is perhaps expanding on the photo section, including some color photos and some larger-sized photos so you can see the details better. I would strongly recommend this book as an important addition to any Dallas fan's collection.

First of all I purchased the FIRST edition when it debuted and was so impressed, amazed and overwhelmingly satisfied with the content. When I heard about a 2nd edition with added features, I was little skeptical about buying another book of the same (despite the fact that I am a tremendous DALLAS fan). WELL! thank goodness I picked up a copy because the 2nd edition is even better than the first (how's that possible, right!). Just having an opportunity to read an Introduction written by Victoria Principal was worth every single penny. Do you know how exciting it was to finally hear VP's feelings on her whole DALLAS experience and how she finally clears the air about the 'distance' she's maintained from the series all these years! Personally, I've always associated her with DALLAS and any interest I'd have in any of her work/projects would be as a result of her DALLAS relation. I really dislike when actors insist on ignoring what brought them to the top. Please don't misunderstand, VP is extremely brilliant & talented in her own right but who would care about her skin care line if she wasn't PAM from DALLAS! Most people wouldn't even know who she was! But with the new edition, any bitterness a 'Pam' fan may have is all laid to rest when you read her introduction and also read her quotes from the Return to Southfork chapter on the reunion. Let me tell you that the DALLAS fan is very fortunate someone decided to do a second run of this book by including The Return to Southfork chapter, VP's intro and a foreword by the DALLAS creator David Jacob's as well as additional photos. There is also mention about the future DALLAS movie. Let's hope the powers that be don't screw it up and keep it true to the original! I cannot stress enough how the 2nd edition of this book was worth every single penny. There are not enough accolades to describe how Barbara Curran perfected a masterpiece! One further note, in the Return to Southfork chapter, any curiosity that you may have as to how the reunion show was perceived, i.e. success or failure, is answered. The reader is provided with a variety of quotes & opinions from media outlets on the reunion show. There was one in particular about it being too overdone and how the cast members turned on the waterworks!....that really disgusted me! What a pity that in our society you are unable to appreciate a cast's genuine love & affection for one another (these cast members what a class act...they don't make em like they used to)! Like they say dirt sells so I'm to assume if they were all talking trash amongst each other.......the ratings would have been better??? Puhleeze!!!

I spent days with my nose buried in this book. Boy, did this bring back memories of one of my all time favorite shows. Unlike some of the sloppy tv books, you can tell that the author had a passion for the show and poured her heart into creating this piece of history. Ratings and rating positions for every episode. Every episode is listed with original airdates. Although the synopsis of episodes is limited, the stories, quotes, and anecdotes listed below the episode will usually remind the reader of what happened. Character's first and last appearances are noted with the episodes occurred. From the great Larry Hagman to the most minor supporting character, attention is given to almost everyone who ever appeared on this show. A wonderful bonus is the additon of the 'Dallas' movies. Also, many rumors are finally settled, usually from the horse's mouth, and so many surprising facts (like Bobby was supposed to die at the end of the 5th episode of the 1st season). I also appreciated the outrage the cast (including Barbara Bel Geddes) had toward the disrespectful treatment of Donna Reed's dismissal by the producers. It seemed like the author put so much heart in this book. And it also seemed like the actors appreciated the thoughtfullness enough to contribute the way that they did. A MUST for any Dallas fan.

Barbara Curran's "Dallas: The Complete Story of the World's Favorite Prime Time Soap" is quite simply one of the best books ever written as a TV series companion. If you like Hollywood, or classic or 1980s TV, or if you were a fan of "Dallas," you will love this book. Curran skillfully skirts the inability (absent studio approval, which she evidently was not able to obtain for this book) to synopsize episodes or include series photographs by relying on interviews with dozens of "Dallas" stars (almost 50 in all, including all the surviving original castmembers and later additions such as Priscilla Presley and Howard Keel) and about 10 pages of great photos taken by Steve "Ray Krebbs" Kanaly over the course of the series and its various reunions. "Dallas" creator David Jacobs' Foreword provides an insightful look at his show's place in the history of television, and Victoria Principal's delightful Introduction provides closure for fans still rattled by her departure from the show. Curran's meticulous research (there seem to be at least 1,000 endnotes relying on several hundred periodical sources above and beyond the 50 cast interviews) is professionally merged with the stories and recollections culled from Hagman, Gray, Duffy, Principal and Tilton and others who appeared on the show such as Christopher Atkins, Barbara Eden, George Kennedy and Susan Lucci. The result? A lengthy (over 450 pages) journey through pop-culture, American style, from 1977 to last year's CBS reunion show. We get the story of "Dallas'" creation, the company's miserable winter on-location pilot shoot, the two-year journey across CBS' ailing schedule and upwards along the weekly ratings chart, Larry Hagman's tour de force before and after J.R. became an international phenomenon, Jim Davis' tragic death from cancer, Barbara Bel Geddes' and Patrick Duffy's infamous comings and goings (one involving Donna Reed and the other involving a shower), Linda Gray's breakout performance, and so on. Along the way, we learn the behind-the-scenes goings on regarding J.R.'s shooting, Sue Ellen's drinking, Lucy's wedding, Miss Ellie's mastectomy, Jock's helicopter crash, Bobby's and Pam's marriage, divorce and remarriage, and of course the never ending Barnes-Ewing feud. The back-up players are all here as well. Curran interviews Kristin and Katherine and Cliff and Clayton, and all those new faces from the show's tenth through thirteenth seasons, when the original cast waned. Curran also provides a neat chapter on the TV movies ("The Early Years," "J.R. Returns" and "War of the Ewings") and on the 2004 "Return to Southfork" reunion. As a result, we follow the cast and crew from their casting phone calls in 1977 through their ride to international superstardom to their reunion last year, on the eve of Fox's upcoming "Dallas" motion picture.
