Finally a reference that devotes an entire page with a picture and useful advice on each plant! I am not one that wants to pour through a list of items, and then have to look each one up as some reference material is set up. I want to see the picture, read about the plant, know where it should be planted, how it will fair, what care it needs etc etc. This book does all that for me. This book has already made my spring planning/planting at our new home a breeze.
Great Color, maybe not enough variety

I purchased this book after wanting to revamp my lawn. Each page is filled with great detail on each common plant, vine, etc. found in Texas. I found it helpful that it lists the common bugs (if any) that would possibly attack the plant. The book is filled with huge colorful pictures. It is a lot more helpful than the original book Dale Groom has (I have both). I recommend this book to any one who doesn't know a lot about the plants that thrive in the many different areas of Texas. Although I think this a great book for any Texan, I almost wished there was more variety. I used this in combination with Home Landscaping: Texas (Home Landscaping). Happy Planting!

Best Book for North Texas

I am a professional Horticulturist and love this book! Even though I know my plant material, the ideas and info in this book are very helpful to me in my industry. And it is written so that someone who doesn't know plant material will also learn a lot. It is an easy read and thorough covers each plant. This is the one book that I keep with me for reference all the time. I would call it my Bible for North Texas Plant Material. I have met Dale several times and he is very knowledgable about this industry and what works in North Texas. You can be sure that what he says in this book is the truth.
Throughly detailed, colorful, and easy to use

Fantastic. Each individual plant description has a large color picture (at least 3.5" x 3"), When, Where, and How to Plant (this is very detailed and includes any necessary soil preparation), Growing Tips (which includes watering and fertilizing including the fertilizer ratio and when to fertilize), Care, Companion Planting and Design and icons on the bottom of the page indicating not only sun preference and drought resitance, but also whether it attracts butterflys, hummingbirds, produces food for wildlife, as well as 9 other icons to numereous to list. It is divided into logical chapters, such as listing Native Wildflowers in a chapter seperate from Perennials. The plant index is very through. This book will not only help you pick your plants, but care for them over their lifespan. All this information is concisely packed into a useable size book you can carry to the nursury with you.If you can only afford one Texas Gardening book, this is the one to have.
