Daily Life During the American Revolution

The Volo's are among my favorite writers of social history. They have written several "Daily Lifes" in which they show their subject in a detailed manner that is also readable and can make learning fun. This book is no exception. It gives a picture of those harsh times. It shows the chaos and the cruelties perpetuated by all parties to the conflict but it also shows how people of all kinds faced it; some with courage and some with ignominy. It gives a glimpse into the life of soldiers(on both sides) as well as civilians. Besides showing politics and war(which it doesn't neglect) it shows the life of the people at the time. Both the normal life of people, and their life when it was disturbed by strife. It doesn't pull punches, but neither does it go out of it's way to assume the worst of people in the past. Like all Daily Life's it is quite suitable for a young reader of reasonable intelligence. Or an older one who wishes to inform himself in a reasonably digestible manner. While it is difficult to make historical writing that is both good scholarship and a pleasant read, this book fulfills this. It gives a glimpse into the complicated and interesting history of these times and lets people have an idea what it was like.
