This book is excellent - complete, thorough, accurate and concise, and as a bonus it is pleasantly written for pleasant reading. Textbook reading is not often enjoyable, however interesting it might be. Tanner makes good progress toward enjoyable, while remaining serious, well researched, and well organized. The only drawback is its age; much has happened in education in the intervening years between its publication and the present time. This doesn't change the accuracy and completness of Tanner's information about history, curriculum writing and curriculum implementation, but the section on the future of curriculum is rather dated. Nonetheless, Tanner anticipates much of the change that has occurred. I hope there is a 4th edition (with the last section updated) in the works.
