The Standard by Which Others are Compared

The Bible of the subject. Each edition gets better, in the last few years of course the big changes have been in HIV/AIDS and in the improved treatment of various cancers. Other than that there are a thousand or more changes, updates and additions on virtually all types of diagnosis and treatments. This is a general book, it crosses all specialties. It is primarily intended for the primary care physician, but would also be of great value in some nursing environments, in remote clinics where a physician might not be available and for specialists in one field who may need information on other areas. I imagine that most people thinking of getting this book are at least familiar with it. All I can really say is that this is the latest edition, it's updated with the latest information, it's the standard by which others are compared.

Can I give it 10 stars?

CMDT is "The Book" for medical doctors, including residents. It is a perfect combination of practical information and theorethical details. It contains "exactly" what you need to know. Unlike big textbooks, it doesn't have all the mumbo jumbo that you will not need for patient care. It is full of practical information about patient management, including medications. their side effects and their prices. It gets updated every year with latest evidence based data and you can be sure that you are practicing based on the latest advances in medicine. For me as a resident, this is the main source. I barely have time to read Harrison's, and even if I do, at the end I will be left with lots of unsolved practical problems. This book is excellent in every aspect. If you read it once, you can rest assure that you know what you are doing. The sections related to other specialities are also perfect for a primary care doctor. I am pretty sure that I will be reading this book for years to come. If I could, I would give 10 stars!

Concise and Complete

I'm a medical doctor currently working in indigenous comunities in southern venezuela. I attend to a wide range of medical and non medical problems. I have used the CMDT almost daily since working here. It has proven to be complete and concise, wich is a great feature when you need to pack your stuff and take a boat to the next comunity!. It is not a review, but it will give you the initial ideas to start investigating or treating. So if you're working in a relatively isolated area, where getting seconds opinions is dificult and takes time, doubt no more, this book will be a great help to you.

CMDT vt Tierney,McPhee and Papadakis

This is an excellent work which documents nearly 1000 maladies- their essential manifestations, general considerations, prognosis, clinical findings, the differential diagnosis and treatment. The work would be valuable so that the physician does not omit any important elements of the overall treatment plan. Optimal drug doses are cited together with annotated references, a general approach to the patient and common symptomatology. Surgical risk factors are outlined in considerable detail. The acquisition would be an important part of any personal medical library. The authors provide a current rendition with brand new references, up-to-date treatments/methods and medical technology.

excellent text

This is an excellent book--as a medical student I have found it invaluable. I have no idea what futuredoc is talking about in his review---this book has many pertinent details. Regardless, the purpose of this book is not to be encyclopedic, but instead to give the reader a brief yet detailed synopsis on specific disease entities. If you want to know everything, then obviously you should go to Harrisons. But carrying Harrison's around is impractical for most people, and it is nice to glance at a text in-between patients when you need to look something up, or brush up on something you haven't seen in a while or can't remember off the top of your head.Additionally, an important detail to remember is that this text is updated yearly, and has a reasonable enough price to consider buying it at least every other year to keep up with all of the ever-changing aspects of General Internal Medicine.I highly recommend this book with no hesitation to anyone interested in a basic Internal Medicine Text that is still detailed enough for clinical use.
