I learned to garden with Jim Crockett
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 19 years ago
I have a warm spot in my heart for this book, and will keep it forever. I learned to garden on PBS with this sweet, gentle man, and I will forever be thankful that he taught me the magic of making things grow. Yes, it's dated, and I don't use as much insecticide and such as he did, but the basics are all here, and he was such a wonderful teacher.

CROCKETT'S VICTORY GARDEN is the first and last gardening book you need buy. It is really that simple. Whether you are a novice or an experienced green-thumb this book is the only gardening guide you need in your library.Divided into chapters by month, James Underwood Crockett provides a comprehensive overview of gardening activities the year round. Each chapter head offers a quick overview of each item in the garden needing attention that month. Subheads give complete details as to how to proceed.Additionally, Crockett offers helpful hints regarding everything from composting to cultivating and from terrariums to trellises. He even provides a comprehensive planting calendar that allows the reader to customize his schedule depending on where he lives in the country. If you ever get a chance to watch the old PBS program of which the book was a companion I highly recommend it. So, happy gardening for this year and for the future.Douglas McAllister
A First-Rate Reference Book For Gardeners

I have been a gardener for over twenty years, and I have had opportunities to examine several books on the subject. Without question, Crockett's Victory Garden is the best book about gardening that I have ever read for two reasons.First, James Crockett wrote with a passion for the subject. His book featured personal anecdotes about the challenges that both he and his co-workers faced at the beginning of the TV show; such as, the problem of converting an abandoned lot into the fertile garden that would become the focus of the show. He also shared his wisdom by responding to various questions from gardeners.Second, the book was very well organized. Mr. Crockett took the reader through the experience of gardening in a concise, month-by-month basis instructing one on what to plant and when and how to do it. The book was written in layman's terms, making it both enjoyable and easy to read.Sadly, James Crockett died several years ago, but his work will continue to influence gardeners both young and old for many years to come. I heartily recommend this book to everyone with a passion for gardening!
