Tasteful 1800s Romance

Absolutely a must read! I loved everything about this book. Susannah travels long ways to raise her best friend's newborn and slowly starts to fall in love with her husband. Story flows nicely. Love these kind of novels. Entertaining and yet has memorable characters.

A Solid 4 1/2 Stars

Courting Susannah is a charming book that features Susannah McKittrick, the namesake of the book obviously, and Aubrey Fairgrieve, the widower of Susannah's childhood friend. Linda Lael Miller again writes a good, solid tale of two wonderful characters and secondary characters also. She weaves humor in with the romance, and even some suspense. While I felt the ending was a little too hurried and abrupt, it was still a good storyline and I highly recommend it!

Courting Susannah

This was a wonderful book - the great quality of Linda Lael Miller is evident in the writing of this story. Following Susannah and her battle to over come her feelings for her old friend and her growing feelings for her dead friends husband is wonderful. Couldn't put it down.

Slow-moving but realistic love story

When Susannah McKittrick leaves Nantucket for the boom town of Seattle, she is hardly looking to strike it rich. She is headed west to care for a newborn left motherless after her friend Julia died. Susannah and Julia grew up together St. Mary's Orphanage. They became blood sisters. The rigorous trip depletes all for her saving and the infant's father, wealthy businessman Aubrey Fairgrieve is indifferent toward the precious baby Susannah is so eager to care for. Susannah and Aubrey get together to take care of the baby. Sometimes they get into discussions because Aubrey does not know how to care of the baby. Time passes and Susannah discovers that Aubrey's marriage to her sister was far from perfect and she comes to see the brusque but handsome man in a new light. Iliked this book beacuse of the way Susannah accepts Aubrey. They work together. Their plan was to have a good life with the baby. This os one of Linda Lael Miller best book. This book is a romance novel. You should read it.

Characterization is Excellent

Miller displays a rare gift of characterization in this book. We begin the story with strong opinions of each of the main characters. By the end of the story, we still harbour strong opinions, but they are 180 degrees out from our original impressions. Only someone with the fine writing skills of Ms. Miller could have accomplished this so adroitly. Also her secondary characters are excellent in their dimensionality and believability. If you haven't read Miller in the past. This is an wonderful place to start. Don't miss this one! You'll regret it!

Well done

In 1906, with no ties in Nantucket, Susannah McKittrick easily dropped everything to head to Seattle when the letter arrived informing her that her friend Julia died. Susannah and Julia grew up together at the St. Mary's Orphanage where they became blood sisters. Susannah vowed to watch over Julia's newborn if something ever happened to her best friend. Julia died from a fever just after childbirth.Four months later, Susannah enters the home of Julia's husband, wealthy businessman Aubrey Fairgrieve. She expects to hate the man that her blood sister grew to loathe. Instead Susannah finds she is attracted to him. Surprisingly Aubrey allows her to stay to care for his daughter. Quickly Susannah brings order out of chaos while she falls in love with her charge and her host. However, Aubrey knew a different Julia than Susannah's childhood friend and expects his guest to show her true colors if he allows a relationship to form.COURTING SUSANNAH makes the first decade of the twentieth century in Seattle alive and fresh and not locating it in San Francisco during the major earthquake. The story line is enjoyable although one must wonder why the suspicious, once burned Aubrey allowed his deceased wife's best friend to stay. Susannah is a warm, strong person and the support cast acts as a catalyst between her and Aubrey. Flashbacks to Julia paint a picture of a spoiled pants chaser, which Susannah should have understood from knowing her blood sister. Still, Linda Lael Miller provides her audience with a wonderful look at an Americana romance.Harriet Klausner
