Very Good Book for Very Young Children

I really like this little board book. Lucy Cousins (of *Maisy* fame) has done an excellent job picking animals that don't usually appear in young children's' books. Animals contained therein: Squirrel, owl, bat, dragonfly, grasshopper, fox, frog, snake, deer, swan and badger. (Yes, a badger!) Every animal except two appear on their own pages. The fox and the deer each cover two pages. The drawings are simple, strong and stylized. You might say they look `country', or you might say that they were drawn by a talented child. In any case I think they are very good for babies and toddlers. (By preschool I think children need to be seeing a more realistic representations.) Five Stars. Okay price. Attractive, Interesting, and Educational for babies and toddlers.

Colorful book that has a folksy feel to it

I like this book because it features different animals that my daughter might actually see outside a zoo. For example, we see squirrels all the time. I also like the way that there is only one animal per page. Younger children prefer uncluttered pages and too much on a page is a sure way to lose their interest. Also, the illustrations are not too literal. They have kind of a folksy feel to them, though they are also readily identifiable. One minor legalistic bone to pick: my husband says that a deer shouldn't have both spots (like a doe) and antlers. Oh well!

Great for small babies!

This book RIVETED my 3-month-old baby. We'd prop the book open to give him tummy time, and he'd stare at each page for minutes on end. When he got a little older, we'd make the sounds for each animal. This book includes some nice unusual animals: squirrel, owl, bat, dragonfly, grasshopper, fox, frog, snake, deer, swan, and badger. I recommend getting the whole set of four in this series: Country Animals, Farm Animals, Pet Animals, and Garden Animals.
