Useful despite the ridiculous title

It *is* possible to teach yourself enough of a language to get by in shops and restaurants. Locals are usually pleased when foreigners try to speak their language, even if the conversation immediately switches to English. Despite the ridiculous title -- no one can learn conversational German in seven days -- this helpful book gives you a little German for interaction with shop clerks, taxi drivers, waiters, and so on. It's organized around exactly these kinds of speech situations. With a reasonable amount of effort, you'll get some usuable langugage skills. You'll also receive an introduction to German culture, which is helpful for the first-time visitor. The book is not sensitive to the differences of Austrian or Swiss culture, but then, neither are the Germans.

Conversational German in 7 Days

Obviously, nobody is going to learn a language in 7 days, but this series is an excellent introduction for someone who is planning a trip. I have used the German and French versions successfully for years in adult conversational courses for people planning a trip abroad. They will get a feeling not only for the language, but also for the culture.
