Alistair is as an astronomer not the usual type of hero, but not less intriguing. Charlotte is a headstrong heroine, who really does was she wants no matter what it will take to achieve her goals. She just wants to be a successful as her brother. The whole story line is fascinating and it is so much fun to read the book. You can hardly wait to see what will happen next to Charlotte and Alistair. So if you are fan of Regency romances hurry to get your copy of this book, because you don't want to miss this terrific book. [...]

Alistair, Viscount Moncreiffe at 25 is thoroughly fed up with the simpering, proper young ladies of the ton, especially the ones who have been setting up all sorts of incidents in which to entrap him into marriage. A serious astronomer, he wants nothing more than to spend his nights on the rooftops of London gazing at the stars that is until the very beautiful, fearlessly independent spy, Miss Charlotte Parnell literally fell into his arms after slipping from a balcony from the room she was trying to break into. Getting caught in this scandalous position by his inebriated father, Alistair felt honor bound to announce their engagement. Charlotte was speechless by his declaration, wanted no part of marriage but after the announcement appeared in the press, both thought it advantageous to continue the ruse until Charlotte completed her mission proving to her brother and the home office that she could be an effective spy all on her own! Alistair found it convenient to be free of the constant harassment of matchmaking mama's. However, it wasn't long before Charlotte found that Alistair could make her see stars even during the daylight hours with just a touch of his very long, very elegant and very talented fingers and lips. This was a thoroughly delightful pairing of adversaries that I found to be extremely refreshing and enjoyable. Alistair was admirably fleshed out in a highly original and well-thought out character as a gentleman, a willing accomplice as a spy, a very sensual fiancé (whether Charlotte wanted one or not) and especially for his role as the peacemaker between his rascally father and staid grandfather. Charlotte, while being a bit bossy and overbearing at times in her quest to prove herself a capable spy, was also refreshing in her honesty providing some truly laugh out loud moments especially during the episode aboard her friend Nicky's ship. When Alistair came to the realization that he rather liked the idea of being married to Charlotte, he knew that he couldn't tempt her in the usual way and employed some very sensual `petting' sessions that were extremely steamy and highly entertaining! The search and mystery over the snuff box was interesting but of little consequence when compared to the delectable romance and Charlotte's final realization of how little she had to gain if in the end she lost Alistair's love and respect. When Alistair, Viscount Moncreiffe, sees Miss Charlotte Parnell dangling from a rooftop, he rushes to her rescue. Catching Charlotte in his arms, intent on her safety, Alistair did not count on being caught in such a compromising position. Unfortunately his own father finds the pair in an innocent but scandalous embrace which leads to their engagement. Charlotte wants to continue her career as a spy. Her brother, and former spy partner, has decided that Charlotte needs to give up spying, marry and lead a normal life. So, Charlotte agrees to a fake engagement. Their engagement will allow Charlotte to continue on her current mission and Alistair will get temporary relief from matchmaking mamas. Certainly, when the mission ends, Charlotte and Alistair will end their engagement. Won't they? I really enjoyed Shirley Karr's Confessions of a Viscount. Charlotte's mission and subsequent partnering with Alistair added enough suspense to keep me entertained. I mention this because the sexual element of the story is not as intense as I have come to expect from historical romances. But don't get me wrong, the heavy petting the pair engage in is very erotic and steamy. It made me yearn for more. I tend to judge romances by how well I like/love the hero. And I surely do love Alistair, Viscount Moncrieffe -- who first shows up in Shirley Karr's "Kiss from a Rogue". Forget what the book's back cover blurb says -- this gorgeous young man (25) is not a rogue. Rather, he's very much a beta hero, an astronomer happy to spend his long nights on rooftops with his telescope instead of women. Until Miss Charlotte Parnell unexpectedly enters his life and leads him on a merry and mysterious "snuffbox" adventure. Both characters are delightful -- Charlotte is a smart, funny, intrepid young lady with some spying experience under her belt and who feels she has something to prove -- not just to her older brother, but to herself. It is easy to see why Alistair falls in love with her. And Alistair is not just a scholarly sort, but also spends time refereeing the personality clashes between his grandfather (a stiff, staid duke) and his father (an irresponsible marquess) -- a most unusual role for a romance hero. If not for Charlotte's timely arrival in his life, he'd likely have spent his life in solitary pursuits. They're a perfect match for one another. I highly recommend this book. Ms. Karr has done a fine job with the characters!

In 1816 Charlotte Parnell wants to become an undercover agent working for the crown just like her older brother Steven is. She knows about their ender bias so the courageous Charlotte must prove her worth by solving the latest case her sibling and his cohorts are working on resolving, the theft of a snuffbox with a letter inside it that could cause damage to England. Her efforts lead her to Alistair Viscount Montcreiffe at a ball and a rooftop fall. However, he feels honor bound to propose marriage to Charlotte for "catching" her; she accepts, but plans to use her engagement as a masquerade to solve the case. Afterward she will end their betrothal though that thought makes her depressed. Soon her plan goes further awry as adversaries want them stooped while love openly blossoms between the pair. Charlotte with her sleuthing makes this a fun Regency romantic suspense as Alistair is hard put to keep up with his slippery beloved though he seems to be there when she falls down. The story line is filled with action, perhaps capers is a better word, as Charlotte leads Alistair into one misadventure after another. Readers will appreciate this fun amateur sleuth historical romance starring a congenial daring duo. Harriet Klausner
