Funny and Insightful

A hilarious look at a less-than-funny condition. Tubesing does a wonderful job of providing a light, laugh-out-loud narrative of dealing with a serious, often embarrassing health challenge. Filled with wonderful insights about family, life, and longtime love, it's a great read, even for those of us lucky enough to have dodged such a diagnosis.

Insightful

"Colitiscope" straddles the delicate line of balance between offering a detailed description of common signs and symptoms of bowel disease (no laughing matter) with a range of thought-provoking, often humorous, stories shared from an insider's perspective (a laughing matter). The author accomplishes the art of de-sensitization ----- tackling a taboo topic while utilizing the prism of humor. This book offers a series of stories from the author's own history which, hopefully, many individuals with bowel disease can identify with yet in a format that allows family and friends to better understand, empathize and respond to those with this hidden illness. Five stars for content, readibility and educational insight.

Brave and Enlightening

Funny, forthright, and informative, this book opened my eyes and awakened my compassion for those suffering from Crohn's and colitis. In the course of sharing these essays with others, I've learned that several people in my life live with either chronic bowel disease or digestive complications related to some other ailment. Were it not for Colitiscope, the topic would have never been raised, and that entire dimension of their lives would have remained unknown to me. With the subject broached--and with the knowledge gained from reading this book--I can now be a more understanding and effective friend. In the end, these essays transcend Crohn's and colitis and offer a window into the challenges of living with any number of quiet afflictions. You walk away from the book more open, more inquisitive, and more equipped to understand one another. It's a brave thing the author has done, publicly bringing attention to this subject, and I applaud him.

Laughing out loud

Thank you for this touching and funny look at a challenging disease and the resulting lifestyle. I gave the book to my daughter who suffers for ulcerative colitis and she loved it- she read from beginning to end in one day without stopping- often laughing out loud. Only someone who has lived thru these experiences could write with such poignancy about this disease and still make it funny. When you live with a disease like this you think you're the only one- Not anymore! There's support and understanding out there. Thank You

A very helpful and humorous guide to bowel disease (really!)

As a long-time sufferer of Ulcerative Colitis I wondered about the concept of looking at such a life-altering disease with humor. It can only be done, I think, by someone who not only has the problem, but who can step outside of it and be willing to share in things that are not only embarrassing, but very serious. Reading the book I found myself remembering some things I'd forgotten from my own past and getting a chuckle out of them. This book will amuse those who have bowel disease, but I think will be a greater benefit to those who are close to someone with it and are trying to understand. Unless you can say you live your life in constant fear of embarrassment and illness, you need to find someone who can do a good job of explaining the experience to you. I recommended the book to my family doctor and to my colon specialist for suggested reading material for patients and their families. I haven't found anything on the subject that is a well done as this book. It will mean someting to a great many people. Well done.
