Spinsters Dora and Josie Winslow have volunteered to search for quilt patterns for their Hedge City, Nebraska, quilt guild. The guild is making a sampler quilt of every state in the union for their annual project, Each pattern is to reflect each state the sisters visit while on their retirement vacation throughout the United states. The spinster sisters have hardly ever taken a vacation and have a lot to learn. They choose Amtrak as their mode of travel. But each time they set out to different regions of the United States, they are caught up in a mystery. On their first trip in Heist Along the Rails they meet detectives Milton and Anthony. Josie becomes infatuated with Anthony who accompanies them on their third trip to the South. The journey begins without incident or definite purpose other than to enjoy themselves and research quilt patterns of the Southern states, until Milton asks to join them. Josie has tried her best to push Milton and Dora together, but Dora resists. Milton will only join them if Dora consents as he has made a promise not to pressure her. He owns a quilt thought to have been made during the Civil War and would like to find its origin. Dora gives her consent that Milton may join them and research his quilt. Finding the quilt's origin becomes the central theme and leads them all through Civil War history and its impact on the nation. Milton uses signatures on the album quilt to begin his search. At first, his strategy yields few results but as the story progresses the origin begins to unfold with the discovery of a Civil War diary. Milton fears he's overtaking his friend's travel plans, but the ladies and Anthony are drawn into the history of the war and its relationship to the quilt. They encourage him in his search.Surprisingly, Milton will discover how he is connected with the quilt and diary. Romance blooms into an unexpected ending. Dora and Josie discover how traveling America and meeting two detectives has enriched their lives.
