THE EMPEROR'S NEW SWORD

When you hear the phrase "The Time of the Warring States" your first thought is probably going to be Japan circa 400 years ago. But as evidenced in this comic, Korea was going through the same troubles. The ruler of the land of Zhou, Moosunge, is supplied with the magical "Pachun Sword" by his scheming prime minister. While at first Moosunge plans to use the sword to protect his own land, his thoughts soon turn to conquering the whole country in a Hitler-like conclusion. Corrupted by the evil lies of the prime minister, the Emperor plans to kill his own brother, the expert swordsman Jaryoon, King of Hahyun. It also seems that the prime minister has enlisted demons in his hunt, which can brush off any attack Jaryoon can use. That's when he meets up with two siblings whose power might prove useful. Rey is the wielder of the "Pasa Sword", a sentient weapon that feeds on demons but can also possess its owner. Rey's bumbling sister Shyao chooses to fight with her magic spells rather than sullying her hands. The three will find that they have common enemies. This book reminded me a lot of Ragnarok, another Korean production, but to me, Hui-Jin's artwork is superior. The action is a little hard to follow in the battle scenes at times, owing to the extravagant motion lines, but for the most part it is beyond criticism. The characters and plot have potential but are underplayed here since this is the first volume that merely has room to introduce the exposition with some fighting included. All in all, Chronicles is off to a good start.

Demons and warriors in feudal Japan

Chronicles of the cursed sword follows a pretty standard formula for a Manga of its type. The hero, Rey Yan, posseses a demon sword of awesome power and uses it to battle the forces of evil which are threatening the land. While containing all the traditional elements this is not a bad effort and the artwork is very well done. The only problems the book has stems from the feeling that you have heard all of this before. There are several points of originality that I did enjoy such as the fact that the sword can posess Rey if he is not careful (a fact that he sometimes embraces cheerfully). The first book does hold the promise of a good series if the writer can break away from the genre and create some originaly.Despite is failings this is a good read and I look forward to the second book's release in November.
