While living with her grandparents when her mother goes to work in the city, a young Panamanian girl memorizes her mother's favorite poem, "Caperucita Roja", for her school's Christmas pageant.
A Delightful Book, A favorite of my daughters, Gorgeous pix

This book tells the story of Chabelita and her family. When her mom takes a teaching job in the city, Chabelita must go live with her grandparents for a few months. Chabelita loves going to the mercado with her abuelo and buying groceries for la abuela. The Spanish used in this book is extremely proper and I enjoy learning and using terms or phrases that I really never grew up with. For instance, when Chabelita gets a package from mom, she immediately wants to open it at the post office. Her abuelo tells her, "Nina, es falta de urbanidad abrir una encomienda en publico." The pictures in the book are beautiful. This book is a real gem and my daughter loves dressing up like Chabelita in her red dress and bow and her black patent leather shoes.
This is a wonderful story!

This is a wonderful story of a little girl that misses her mother. The illustrations throughout the book are beautiful and eye catching to the target audience. The exposure to Chabelita's culture allows young readers to experience a little bit of life that might be different from their own. This is a sweet story that transcends culture.
