Christmas in Denmark

Part of a series developed by World Book Inc. several decades ago for young people, these 80-page books have evolved into a rich storehouse of information for anyone of any age who enjoys learning the Christmas history, stories, regional Christmas songs, Christmas crafts, and holiday recipes of many nations. One of the interesting aspects of "Christmas in Denmark" is the story of how bakers from Vienna were brought to Denmark when the bakers of Copenhagen went on strike. They baked Viennese rolls that were loved by the Danes and eventually the recipe was used by bakers all over Denmark. The Danes still call them Viennese rolls or weinerbrod. The recipe came to the U.S. where we call it "Danish." It's a traditional breakfast treat on Christmas morning in Denmark. The book is richly illustrated with full-color photos. Two Danish carols have the original language, English translation, and piano arrangements -- "Lovely is the Dark Blue Sky" and Hans Christian Andersen's "Child Jesus."
