His reflections on the comfort we have that Christ is our Shepherd and His purpose for us to grow in His grace and knowledge will succeed. It is only our misunderstanding of the dynamics of our salvation and what it means to live the Christian life that impedes our growth from the human perspective. If I could sum up the book in a few words I could say that failure is built into lives to cause us to depend all the more on the sufficiency of Christ as our all and all and because of Christ's grace our failure is not final. Tom's exposition of the false view of the "carnal" Christian that is frequently taught, that separates Christians into two classes of believers, should encourage any one who has tried to work through their spiritual struggles as a Christian in light of faulty teaching. Tom's honesty concerning his own spiritual journey in the ministry and what he taught and then re-examined needs to be taken to heart by all who consider themselves teachers of the Scriptures. Should this book ever go out of print someone needs to get the rights and publish it and make it available even in electronic format.

With extensive Scriptural references, the book is excellent reading for Christians whose failings often cause them to doubt their own salvation, leaving them confused and frustrated, instead of making them grateful for God's abundant grace, mercy, and patience. The book also helps to guard oneself against questioning the salvation of others on the basis of their actions and against the sort of "evangelism" that drives others away before they have heard the true Gospel.

This author teaches a believer how to think about who he is in Christ and how to get off the guilt trip man-centered preachers put them on.God IS at work in His people, and Christians are loved and changed by Him.
