I consider this to be the best book of its type. Although it was written in 1980, and obviously much of the information is out of date, it is a concise and thoroughly researched guide. The strength of this book is that the author omits biased information and, thankfully, doesn't try to steer the reader with an emotional spin.
Straightforward and comprehensive. A must for dog buyers

We've researched at least six different books addressing the selection of the proper breed of dog, given our particular circumstances. Mr. Howe's book is by far the best. Our copy is worn and tattered after use by different members of our family and some of our friends.
