Children/visual Impairments

Excellent, informative book. I bought it for my grandson & mate who recently gave birth to my great-grandson, born with cataracts. I read most of it before sending to them. Very useful to those of us with no knowledge of this impairment.

Enthusiastically recommended not just for parents, but also for anyone in contact with a blind child

Special education expert M. Cay Holbrook, Ph.D. applies her years of experience educating visually impaired children in the updated second edition of Children with Visual Impairments, a jargon-free resource especially for parents of children who are blind, legally blind, or have low vision. Especially focusing on children from birth through age 7, Children with Visual Impairments covers issues such as treatment options and medical problems, the development of a visually impaired child, how to nurture self-esteem, legal issues, cultivating literacy, helping children learn Braille and becoming familiar with it oneself, dealing with problems of orientation and mobility, and much more. Children with Visual Impairments is enthusiastically recommended not just for parents, but also for anyone in contact with a blind child, and for library and educational reference shelves.

Good for teachers, too!

I work with blind and visually impaired children as a teacher. The parents with whom I work have taught me a great deal, and reading this book has helped me to understand some of their concerns, questions, and what they have gone through. New teachers with B/VI students seems to go through a similar process when they hear they will have a student who is unique in this way, so it has helped me have more productive conversations with them, as well. I have met the editor at a conference. Not surprised she produced such a quality piece of work. A must buy, and a very good price.

Highly recommended for parents!

We searched for five years for answers to our questions about our daughter's eye problems. Each time we got new information, I found the official termonology in this book with a clear, concise explanation for what was written in the doctor's reports. This book explains the different exams and tests as well as what you can to do help your child get the most out of the vision he/she has. Also includes valuable resources and other information. A must have if your child has, or you suspect your child has, a visual impairment.
