Book Overview

LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD - "This exquisite debut wrestles with gender, siblinghood, family, and what it means to be Muslim in America--all through the lens of love."--Time

"Haunting . . . a knife-sharp story of self-discovery."--People

WINNER OF THE CAROL SHIELDS PRIZE FOR FICTION - ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker, NPR, Time, Vox, PopSugar, Autostraddle

In this heartrending, lyrical debut work of fiction, the acclaimed author of If They Come for Us traces the intense bond of three orphaned siblings who, after their parents die, are left to raise one another. The youngest, Kausar, grapples with the incomprehensible loss of their parents as she also charts out her own understanding of gender; Aisha, the middle sister, spars with her "crybaby" younger sibling as she desperately tries to hold on to her sense of family in an impossible situation; and Noreen, the eldest, does her best in the role of sister-mother while also trying to create a life for herself, on her own terms.

As Kausar grows up, she must contend with the collision of her private and public worlds, and choose whether to remain in the life of love, sorrow, and codependency that she's known or carve out a new path for herself. When We Were Sisters tenderly examines the bonds and fractures of sisterhood, names the perils of being three Muslim American girls alone against the world, and ultimately illustrates how those who've lost everything might still make homes in one another.

Well, I thought it was delightful

I really liked this book. James' style is funny and refreshing in a great load of dignified historical romance. She includes sweet details about regency life that float through the description. The characters are real, but overall commendable. The romances are real, too. I would recommend forgetting the summary and just going with the story. I also recommend starting with Duchess in Love. I didn't, this is first Eloisa James...

I completely disagree with the one star review

Eloisa James is like a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of historical romance. Her books are just fun. They are designed to be read in order so you do get involved with the characters. I happened to love this book as Esme is my favorite character and I am happy that she and Sebastian are finally together. I don't recommend you just jump in on the third book in the series. Start with Duchess in Love and work...

A fun and fresh romance!

I thought this was such a fun book. Eloisa James really writes something different and fresh because she excels at doing the dynamics not only of romance, but of friendships. Beatrix was a delightful vixen and Stephen was her perfect match. What a charming book! I don't usually enjoy lots of subplots, but this was like attending a thrilling house party with lots of romantic intrigue. I can't wait to read more from this...

A Delightful Menagerie of Characters and Plots

This is my first book by this author, but will definately not be my last. I love her style of writing, she goes from one storyline to another in a very seemless fashion. The book is supposed to be about the story of Bea and Stephen, but surprisingly Esme and Sebastian also had their own wonderful love story. I loved the fact that Bea was so unconventioneal, a trollop, that is something a heroine rarely is in a Regency novel...

Sexy and fun.

I LOVE Eloisa James, her characters are so unique, they are not your typical heros or heroines. I thought the story of Esme and Sebastian dragged a little in this book. I felt bad for Sebastian. However, I gave the book 5 stars because I really loved the love story between Bea and Stephen. They are HOT!!! It was also fun to see Stephen being "involved" w/all three women at once. I can't wait to read "Your Wicked Ways,"...
