Dr. Anderson's "crash course" on raising children

Care Enough to Discipline - Raising Children for the 21st Century by Doctor Lane S. Anderson, Ed.D Immediately after reading this hands-on crash course on how to raise today's children, I sent copies of Dr. Anderson's book to my two children in New York City for mandatory reading so my three new grandchildren can be "all that they can be", to paraphrase our military. I only wish my wife and I had had the benefit of the insightful way in which Dr. Lane weaves the Biblical book of Proverbs into a modern context. We could have taken our child rearing from good to great by concentrating more on the all-powerful idea of "being examples they want their children to become", as explained by Dr. Anderson in clear terms. I was struck by the parallels between the book's concepts and applications of its principles to when I was CEO of two public companies and my subsequent corporate governance practice with Nexsen Pruet PLLC. Ethical behavior becomes part of the DNA when the board and CEO live the sermon; identical to parents and teachers who in their daily lives live the core values of honesty and respect. They model the Golden Rule. The tone at the "top" as demonstrated by the character of those in positions of leadership, teaches respect for others - the core of the Golden Rule. What you say and written ethics statements have nominal influence on human development, if you don't, at the same time, "walk what you talk." Parents need to model what they preach. So do business people. Knowing personally his extremely positive attitude, it is easy to understand why Dr. Anderson was a serial award-winning principal at schools known for high academic accomplishment, the closing of minority achievement gaps, strong parental support and excellent school-wide discipline. It is fortunate for us all that he is now sharing his wealth of wisdom and knowledge with a much wider audience. J. Phillips L. Johnston, JD and Author
