This book examines the instruments for decision coordination within and among the economies belonging to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA). In light of the forcedeconomic adjustments of the early 1980s, Jozef van Brabant offers this study of the centrally planned economies and the inadequacy of their coordination mechanisms. He proposes that a resumption of faster growth depends largely upon increasing the pace of factor productivity growth--something that can only be achieved through structural change and a reform of the economic mechanism.
A long time ago, when I was a little boy, one of my teachers would read a book after lunch to us, as we ate our ice cream. She was an English teacher who was also English and we would bring in a book for her to read. One day I brought in this one and we listened to her, half an hour a day, with her lovely voice till, I assume it only took a week, it was done. I think she enjoyed it also - a story set in an English village by an English author. For only a 133 pages this is a very well crafted story. It is short, with smart kids, adult scientists, giant blood-sucking flies and tons of sheep.
