Historical Fiction during world war ll

I almost feel bad saying this..but this was a hard book for me to rate.I wanted to give it a 5 star, but something about it just didn't nudge me to that 5th star. I don't want to give the wrong impression, it was a Fabulous story, and I have read this Author's other novel " My Name is Eva" which was Absolutely Fabulous!!! And in saying that, I think that's what spoiled this story for me ! I Loved, Loved, Eva's story soooo much..that I think I was waiting, and comparing, this story to that one. Which in all fairness..isen't right, I know..but ..I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed . The story goes between the years of the war when the Germans invade a little Greek Island, where the small amount of Jewish inhabitants coexist with the Greeks, in a friendly, happy, respectful way. The story tells about one particular family who are forced to give up their two youngest children 3,5, yrs old, who they managed to hide from the list of names the Germans have. The Day comes that the Jewish people are rounded up to the center of town in an old broken stone fort, for a week, with no food, no water but a bucket here and there between a thousand of them, in the unbearable heat of summer. The Small babies in the meantime have been smuggled out, to live high in the mountains in a safe home of a Greek husband and wife who never had children of their own. The story will RIP your heart out, with the way all the Jewish people are handled, tortured, killed, thrown into the ocean over the cliffs, just because they are old, or small babies crying.. very very heartbreaking. The young children with the Greek couple are being cared for and loved by the couple who are hiding them..trying to reassure them.. that one day, their mommy and Daddy, and 13 yr old sister will all come back from working for the Germans, and will all be a happy Family again. This is the story they have chosen to tell these precious young babies..to keep them calm and happy. Now we go to 2006, and a young married couple who have left their very Stressful high paying jobs of London, to open a B&B on the same Islands... they have their share of unfortunate problems..which is to lengthy to give here, but intertwines with what happened to the two little girls, and how they were saved.I feel the story is very easy to follow..but tells us alot more of the young couples struggles and the other people around them..than of the two girls. You do find out what becomes of the young girls, but not such a hopeful ending for the young couple. This story is told in beautiful vivid details, of the island, the foods, the orchards, the weather, almost feels as if your there .In all it's a wonderful and different story, with many different characters lifes inter woven.
