Book Overview

I do know things really began to spin out of control after my first sex dream. It all started with a dream. Nothing exceptional, just a typical fantasy about a boy, the kind of dream that most teen girls experience. But Pattyn Von Stratten is not like most teen girls. Raised in a religious -- yet abusive -- family, a simple dream may not be exactly a sin, but it could be the first step toward hell and eternal damnation. This dream is a first step...

Nothing to do with burning

I don't know why this bothers me so much. The title has nothing to do with the book. So don't buy it if you got captivated by the title alone. Otherwise it was a good enough story.

I want more!

Read the book in a day! I do wish that there was more said at the end definitely leaves you wanting more, a great quick read.

Another Masterpiece that hooks you until the end!

Ellen Hopkins has yet again created another masterpiece that is both touching and thrilling. This book creates images of a story that people can relate to and see happening in our every day lives. It takes place in a Mormon family where a woman's only role is to have as many children as she can (mostly boys), take care of them and please her husband - even if it means getting beaten! In Pattyn's (the main characters)world, she has never known true freedom until her father catches her with a boy (that isn't Mormon) and after a series of dilemas, is sent to live with her Aunt J whom has never gotten along with her brother, Pattyn's father. The story continues at Pattyn's finds love, hatred, pain, and the harsh sides of her own reality and the one person she truly loves... This heart warming story will live you in tears or close to them. Enjoy!

Ellen writes my world...

I received a copy of BURNED in the mail from my cousin yesterday & couldn't put it down. I finished it all last night & was completely smitten! My cousin & I were both reared Mormon, & thus identified intensely with the story. We both come from dysfunctional families, which often made me feel like Hopkins had been peeking through my curtains to obtain her material for BURNED. I am now almost 30 & think this book is long overdue. Hopkins portrayal of a battered young girl in a devoutly religious ( & more specifically, Mormon) family is dead on the mark. If only I had the clarity of Pattyn when I was a teen. (As conflicted & confused as Pattyn often is, she is wise beyond her years. My adolescence was marked with a blur of foggy madness...a fury of anger, loneliness, & confusion.) I have since made peace with my past & have left the Mormon church. Yet all the years and miles later, reading BURNED was like going home.

This book is incredible

I absolutely adored this book. I think other should have more of an open mind to the book instead of critizing it because it brings the mormon religion into it. And for those of you who think the book is not accurate. It Is. I have a couple of friends who are mormon and say that the book is accurate and that most mormons will not admit it. Plus the suicide rate in Utah for women is up really high. I see why after talking to one of my friends about the religion then reading this book. I encourage any girl with love issues that her family has issues excepting her dating someone out of whatever their religion is to read this book. Its an incredible story. And just to clarify the whole book is not based around mormon things its much deeper.

critics

I thought this book was wonderful. Some people have taken offense to this book, saying that it criticizes the mormon religion. This not aimed towards religion, it is aimed at an abusive, dysfunctional family. Those types of families are present in every religion possible, and so are corupt chruches. If you are a mormon you should not be offended by this book in the least, this is about another person and her story. There are alot of people who are not mormon that have an abusive family, and alot of people have also been in corupt churches: Baptist, Medthodist, Mormon, ect. Many people can relate. As I said before it was NOT aimed at the mormon religion, it could have easily been writen about any other religion you could possibly think of. It just so happened that the person it was based on was mormon, and that is how she felt, not how the author felt. In defense of Ellen Hopkins I love her books CRANK and BURNED and I hope she contiunes to write.

Burned

I've read the reviews on Burned and certainly understand the concerns of the people saying that Burned is giving a false image of mormonism. Mormonism does play a negative roll in the story, but it is also through the eyes of Pattyn, who, being raised in a dysfunctional Mormon family(not implying that there is any connection between the two), would obviously not think very highly of the religion. As to whether or not Ellen's facts are outright false I won't pretend to be the authority on the religion, although I have, in the past, done light research on it. Perhaps the complaints are legitimate (though in my humble opinion they're not really going to do any good for anyone), but in any case I enjoyed the book, as I did Crank.
