One of the many things I love about Whartons’s writings is the way she brings the reader into deep simpático with her main characters. This story (novella?) is no different, despite the fact that there are few people who even know women similar to the main characters in the story.
Actually, and tragically, we are probably familiar with the man who brings about their downfall. When we first meet them, they are managing to live a life if dignity, if not happiness, within their limited incomes. Unfortunately, they fall victim to an amoral predator who cares nothing for the two of them and who they are.
Whartons beautiful prose can also bring tears to my eyes as she weaves the stories of the people who live mainly in the Manhattan of her era. She provides enough details about them and their environment to almost make you feel as if you are in a history class, while engrossing you in the stories that still can resonate in our hearts.
This is another one of her classics.
