Brave Janet Reachfar

There are so many things about Brave Janet Reachfar that makes this book a winner. It is respectful of rightful authority of parents and grandparents. It recognizes personalities which at times might be stern, and at other times can be gentle and loving. Without slapping you in the face with the obvious, it shows the disobedience of an authority figure, all the while being familiar with the consequences of this action, albeit done for a good cause. And it echoes Biblical principles with its tender forgiveness.

This book appeared on our book shelves about two years ago. My daughter and I are trying to read through all of our books so I grabbed this one tonight for the bed time story. The tale is told of a Scottish sheep farm in a very rural setting, and of the extended family that lives and works the farm. There is something deeply satisfying about this story. It's like eating a simple yet wonderful meal. The illustrations go perfectly with the story, and are of a type you just don't see anymore. The colors are neither washed out nor overbearing. The story is told without too many words, nor too few. In short, I can't think of a fault to find with this book.
