This is the first Nancy Kress book I ever read so many many years ago. It introduced me to her writing in novels and reminded that I enjoyed her short stories in Asimov's Science Fiction magazine. This is, in my mind, the first science fiction novel written in the cyberpunk period which dealt with medical issues and what humans may become in a realistic manner. Her characters are alive. They aren't throw away meant to move a story along for another. They live. Her knowledge and use of science is spot on. Some might be willing to consider her a "hard" science fiction writer. I do. Her writing is tight yet descriptive. Don't miss out on one of the best science fiction authors ever.

While I know this book has gone out-of-print and was never widly read I would have trouble thinking of a better science fiction book to recomend. Very intellegent and fairly well written. Kress is just a damn good writer.
