Book Overview

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - More than one million copies sold! A "brilliant" (Lupita Nyong'o, Time), "poignant" (Entertainment Weekly), "soul-nourishing" (USA Today) memoir about coming of age during the twilight of apartheid

"Noah's childhood stories are told with all the hilarity and intellect that characterizes his comedy, while illuminating a dark and brutal period in South Africa's history that must never be forgotten."--Esquire

Winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor and an NAACP Image Award - Named one of the best books of the year by The New York Time, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, NPR, Esquire, Newsday, and Booklist

Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother--his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love.

The book you sent me is not in "VERY GOOD" condition! It has notes written all over!

A follow up update: Thrift sent me another copy free of charge, to replace the one that I received earlier. It is a good customer service and I wanna acknowledge that. Thanks! I loved this book and I decided to read it multiple times after I borrowed a library book. So I go ahead and purchased one here with a "VERY GOOD" condition. But the book I received has noted written all over the books for a lot of pages. It should never be labelled as "VERY GOOD" in the first place!

This book is truly a classic - lots of lessons learned in witty and funny way!

I highly recommend anyone looking to get a glimpse into what it was like to grow up as a mixed kid in South Africa to read this! There are so many funny learning moments. This books is easy to understand for those in their late teenage years. It's fast pace.

This book was not NoT in good condition the binding is broken the book received in bad condition!

This book should be returned its in bad condition broken binding and pages missing and a stank smell.

Born a Crime

Excellent both written and CD format (for long drives for those of us who have vehicle with a CD player!)... Gave me fresh perspective and understanding of prejudice in todays world... Trevor has marvelous manner in which to share sensitive topics in a humorous manner.

A book about apartheid has no right to be this funny

[Edit: There is a version for kids called "It's Trevor Noah: Born a Crime" that has any swear words taken out, get it for all the kids in your life.] I can't think of another book that is this readable and this eye-opening at the same time. I lost count of how many times I actually laughed out loud and how many times I had real tears in my eyes. You'll be left marveling at the resilience of the human spirit, especially when it is fortified by the faith that Trevor's mother Patricia held on to in the middle of bone-chilling circumstances. After you read it, go find the audiobook read by the author - so much emotion is added by hearing him retell the stories himself, and he is masterful at imitating voices and speaks the many different languages throughout the book, putting you in that world in a totally different way than reading it. Also, find his stand-up about his mother in the last chapter on Youtube. A small excerpt of how the author injects humor, describing his grandmother's two-room house: "There was a bedroom, and then there was basically a living room/kitchen/everything-else room. Some might say we lived like poor people. I prefer 'open plan.' " The humor makes it easier to learn about this important, not-long-ago history.

loved it.

This is an amazing, very readable, and insightful book. so many laugh out loud moments and the part with his mum near the end - wow. Highly recommend.

Top 10

Absolutely love this book! The audio version that he reads himself is also wonderful. At times it’s hard to believe it’s not a fictional story.

One of my favorites

This book was so amazing. Funny, emotional, and makes you not want to stop reading!!! Trevor Noah is a brilliant comedian and I suggest listening to stand up of his if you’re thinking of reading to get a feel for his voice.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

You don't have to know who Trevor Noah is to want to read this book. Though the Daily Show is what lead me to read this book. I was impressed with his story telling and how much it allowed me a glimpse into Apharteid. My admiration for Trevor Noah is infinitely greater after reading this book.
