Book Overview

Who better to face the greatest evil of the 20th-century than a humble man of faith?

As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In his blockbuster New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life--the theologian and the spy--and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil. Metaxas presents the fullest accounting of Bonhoeffer's heart-wrenching decision to leave the safe haven of America to return to Hitler's Germany, and sheds new light on Bonhoeffer's involvement in the famous Valkyrie plot and in "Operation 7," the effort to smuggle Jews into neutral Switzerland. In a deeply moving narrative, Metaxas uses previously unavailable documents?including personal letters, detailed journal entries, and firsthand personal accounts?to reveal dimensions of Bonhoeffer's life and theology never before seen.

Wonderfully written book

Metaxas does a fantastic job covering and giving context to a brother who is an example of a true disciple of Jesus. I am thankful to be able to learn from other believers that have lived faithful lives to Jesus.

Book was written by a Christian Nationalist who misrepresented Bonhoeffer

This book has received a lot of critism from the historical community for the vast misrepresentation of Bonhoeffer - including changing many of his core beliefs. It was written by Christian Nationalist Eric Metaxas who has punched a protestor (then lied about it until video evidence was provided). He also has advocated for lying in his book, "Letter to the American Church." Please learn about the great human, Bonhoeffer,...

Incredible!

This book is incredible! Don't be intimidated by the size. The content is wonderful. Gives some neat insight into Bonhoeffer's childhood. Also, for those interested in the WW2 era and the years leading up to it, this book is a must read!!

One of my all-time favorites

This is a nonfiction work based on Bonhoeffer's life. Eric Metaxis did extensive research in order to introduce us to a true hero of history. Everyone should read this book to gain knowledge of World War II, the sacrifices made and the importance of standing up for what is right, regardless the consequences. I have purchased 3 copies of this book since it is one of my favorites.
