Moody, Frightening, Gripping & Spellbinding

It's 1856 and Sinclair Copley and Eleanor Ames are aboard the HM Brig Coventry in the Southern Ocean. Eleanor is ill. The ship has been blown off coarse and the superstitious sailors blame the passengers. When they find out what Eleanor's medicine really is, they wrap the pair in chains and toss them into the cold, cold ocean. In the present day the love of Michael Wilde's life lies in a coma, the victim of a climbing accident. Michael is awash in depression, which leads him to accepting a job in Antarctica, where while on a dive one day to photograph marine life he comes across two bodies encased in ice. The frozen couple seem almost alive. They're wrapped in chains. How'd they get there? Accident? Murder? Michael and crew bring the bodies up and wait for them to thaw out, but they disappear and a couple of the crew are murdered. Who did it? This the survivors need to know. Plus, where are the dead from the deep? These questions will grip you as the book moves between time and place, telling us both Sinclair and Eleanor's story and Michael's as well. There is horror afoot in Antarctica, but it didn't originate there. This is a story peopled with characters easy to identify with. It's moody, frightening, gripping and spellbinding. Cracking!

I really liked the premise of this book when I first came across it, and was not dissapointed. The author's pedigree is well-established, having written novels and TV scripts (for some of my favourite shows) for years, but this is the first book of his that I have read. The most striking thing for me was the way the book dealt with the environmental setting of "Pole" (not "the" Pole, apparantly!) - it was strikingly evocative, and I really felt like Robert Masello had actually been there first-hand, and it cetainly made me want to leave the comfort of my own armchair and go there. His new spin on the old legends of the vampire was very refreshing, the characters and plot wholly believable, and on the whole, this was a verysatisying read - thoroughly recommended.

A SEQUEL & A MOVIE, please!

Here is a fantastic, incredibly atmospheric, suspense-thriller (and love story) for people who aren't afraid of a dash of poetry, science and history. Mr. Masello has come up with amazing twists as well as a brilliant new take on an age-old demonic problem. Others have talked about the plot and I will just add that many days after finishing this rapid-read the characters and the story still haunt me. If you're prepared to stay up late .... then start reading this page-turner.

waiting in ice

What a page-turner! This is a fantastic and thrilling story, loaded with a lot of information about Europe during the 1850's, and the present day Antarctic. Journalist Michael Wilde has traveled to the South Pole to write a story about the American Research Station and the people working there. He accompanies a scientist on a dive into the frigid water and discovers frozen inside a glacier, a beautiful woman and a man chained together. The block of ice containing the couple is brought to the laboratory to thaw out. Also brought up is a trunk with some interesting bottles inside. Of course, now the mystery begins when the couple disappear! The woman is found a distance away at an old abandoned whaling station.....alive, and dressed from the era of the 1850's. Eleanor Ames is an English nurse who worked with Florence Nightingale. Found later is Sinclair Copley, a British soldier who fought in the Crimean war. But, how can they still be alive after centuries encased in the ice, and why? There is a curse involved...and that is all I will say......read the book, you won't be disappointed!

Blood and Ice

Great book. I like the way the author goes back and forth between the past and present. He keeps secrets along the way, and you can't guess the ending. Fast read.
