Gripping novel. I couldn't put it down.

Being familiar with South Dakota territory and The Bad Lands, this really held my interest.

awesome book

I had been disappointeed in the last couple of NR books i had read but this one really grabbed my attention. Not only am I a fan of NR but I'm a huge animal lover. I loved all the detail and even gained some knnowledge of the cougar. NR has redeemed herself. keep 'em coming!

Well Done

Well Done... I actually downloaded this book to my iPod then bought the hard copy to read while someone read the story to me. I just loved listening to someone read it to me. The reader, Nick Podell (hope I spelled his name correctly) did an excellent job and I had many a giggle with the way he represented each character. Black Hills is a very good book and I enjoyed the whole story of how Lil and Coop met.... their relationship through their lives and how they become lovers again all while Lil was being stalked by a psychopath. Being an Aussie, I've never been to Sth Dakota and have no idea what the scenery was like.... but listening to the book gave me a good idea. I thoroughly enjoyed the story....Keep up the good work Nora.

Wonderful book!!!

Gosh, I don't know how Nora Roberts does it, but she still manages to write one great book after the next ... Out of the 20 or so books I have read by her yet (I only discovered her books a year ago) this is possibly the best --- I absolutely loved it, and finished it in 3 days! The characters are great - both the lead and supporting characters. The story is set mostly in a wildlife refuge in the Black Hills of South Dakota --- not your usual setting for a book, and definitely very interesting. That's something I really like about Mrs. Roberts's books --- she always makes sure to use different geographical settings (Alaska, Wyoming, Tennessee, South Dakota and many more) and themes (from the repercussions of traumatic events or family secrets to such things as house-flipping or now wildlife conservation). "Black Hills" is superbly written and engaging ... there's a beautiful romance (actually, more than one), there's suspense right until the end ... a definite winner ... :o) If you liked "Angels Fall" or "Northern Lights" then you're going to love "Black Hills"!!!

Finally! She's back on track.

I too have read Nora Roberts for many years and I have to agree with the reviewers that state her last few books have been below par. They were better suited to checking out of the library, rather than reaching in your wallet. This one is an exception. It goes beyond the imagery of the setting, which was well written. Roberts once again manages to bring forth a wide array of joy, sorrow, suspense and drama in this one. It was a pleasure to read, and painful to put down to do my day to day tasks. I won't rehash some of the scenes, as that can be read from other reviewers, but let me end with this one thought. As you stand in line at the bookstore, trying to decide if this Roberts hardback is worth the cost...pull out your wallet. She got it right with this one.

super romantic suspense

At eleven years old Coop Sullivan was sent for the summer to his grandparents' South Dakota ranch. Although he objected as he never wanted to go, he meets Lil Chance there and he learns to love his relatives who shower him with love back. This was the most wonderful summer of his life and he repeated it for years until he and Lil fell in love. However, they went their separate ways to attend colleges many miles apart until he deserted his Lil and their love. Now almost a decade later, Coop is at the ranch caring for his grandmother and Lil is back too. The wildlife biologist wants no part of her former lover, the ex police officer turned private investigator. However she needs him when uncontroversial proof surfaces that the man who killed some animals and a man waits for her on her animal refuge. Coop risks his life to keep his beloved Lil safe and hopes the time will give him a chance to make amends for his failure as he now knows with maturity she is the one. BLACK HILLS is Nora Roberts at her magical best as she constructs what seems on the surface as a formulaic romantic suspense, but in her words turns into a thrilling love story. Lil is terrific as she understands her peril and turns to the only person she trusts to keep her alive when the High Noon confrontation she (and readers) anticipates occurs. Coop would be resolute anyway, but has the additional motive of regaining and retaining Lil in his life. In some ways the killing predator steals the show as he hunts two and four legged beasts. Ms. Roberts shows why she is consistently a best seller author with this super thriller. Harriet Klausner
