This story is based on the life of Billy Bayly, a real boy who lived in Pennsylvania during the Civil War and had an unlikely friendship with a Southern soldier.
This is a book about two boys during the Civil War who are on different sides, but who become friends. Billy and his mother made "Cousin" a part of their family, because as a run-away Confederate soldier in the North, he couldn't go anywhere else. The theme of the book was about the importance of helping people who are needy. The book was good at teaching a lesson about that even if people are on different sides, it's important to help. I would recommend this book to people ages 9 - 13, and people who might have to war but don't want to.
